Those who live in the upper Midwest may find this hard to credit, but my wife Barbara and I drive a convertible with the top down here in Wisconsin more often than we did during the decade we lived in California—even with five months off for... Well, we lived near the coast in Southern California, where the sea air made it quite chilly in the evening and the bright sunlight made it a little too hot if you got stuck in traffic during the day. Easier to leave the top up. We did have some wonderful top-down drives in that state, however, cruising up the Coast Highway through Big Sur, or just driving our MGB down to Laguna Beach for breakfast, with the palm trees waving in the golden sand... Where was I. Ah yes, stuck in the upper Midwest, but still driving convertibles—a Jaguar XK8 , in this case. Walking out of the house was like stepping into a pizza oven, so the Jag's top often stayed up and the air got turned on. Evenings were a little better, but I found the best time to use a convertible was in the cool of morning, starting before... Fine, you say, but what kind of crazy person would get up at such an hour, just to drive a convertible. Both are brilliant on the road, as you’d expect of Jaguar and Aston Martin. The supercharged 3. 2 litre straight six is the pick of the bunch, delivering shattering performance and a supercharger howl, or serene like motoring, just depending upon your mood. The XK8’s is softer and less ruffling, and the steering is lighter. Pretty decent DB7s can be had for £15,000, and absolutely mint ones can be bought for £25,000. Prices are beginning to pick up though, so if you want to buy one, better do it now. In fact, they’re pretty much as low as they’re going to get. £5000 will buy a very nice early example, and they can be had for even less if you’re willing to get your hands dirty. Jaguar has announced that the XK will cease production in summer 2014. The Ian Callum-penned coupe and convertible models, which have jointly sold more than 54,000 units since arriving in 2006, have been canned with no direct replacement in the... Instead, Jaguar is plotting a stunning £110,000 flagship to rival the Aston Martin DB9 and Bentley Continental GT. The new flagship Jag will be a proper 2+2 seater, taking the fight to the grand-tourer big boys from Britain, Germany, and Italy. The XK Dynamic R take a standard 503bhp XKR and adds massively stiffer XKR-S suspension, a 10mm ride height drop, and bodykit extensions from the ‘Speed Pack’. You’ll pay £69,950 for the XK Dynamic R – a massive £9015 cheaper than the XKR it effectively replaces for the remainder of the XK’s life-cycle. The other Jaguar XK special edition is the XK Signature. Based on the more sedate 380bhp XK coupe (which uses a naturally aspirated version of the 5. 0-litre V8), the Signature spec is an exercise in cramming in extra kit. >> Will the XK be remembered fondly among the best Jaguars.
