The wide-bodied Jaguar XJ12 C, famously piloted by Patrick Macnee as John Steed in The New Avengers TV series, is to go up for auction at H&H’s forthcoming sale on 14 October. The iconic car, in need of some work, is expected to sell for over £10,000. The 1976 XJ12 C was one of Steed’s most iconic companions, staring in the show along side Range Rovers and various other British classics throughout the series. The eighth car to roll off the production line, this 12-cylinder XJC was originally produced by Jaguar as an experimental car, and comes with Heritage certification to confirm so. Yes, this is the actual 1976 Jaguar XJ12-C that starred alongside Macnee, Joanna Lumley as Purdey and Gareth Hunt as Gambit in the series. The XJ12-C was a tweaked, sportier version of the pillarless two-door XJ Coupé, powered by Jaguar's legendary 5. 3-litre V12. It was the absolute epitome of the rakish, somewhat louche British car culture of the mid-1970s, the perfect wheels for... Finished in Racing Green, this was only the eighth XJ12-C made. Sadly, as with so many iconic movie cars, when filming ended it was 'dry stored' - which is a nice way of saying 'parked in a hangar and forgotten' so when it was re-discovered recently and put up for auction it was in very poor condition and... The guys from H&H Classics had to do quite a lot of work on it just to get it running (check the first of the two videos) but it's complete and will make a dream project for somebody who loves a 'barn find' - which is almost literally what this... But not in the new Mercedes-Maybach S600. Oh, I tried it, and it's not bad, but the Comfort setting is much better. The Maybach, you see, is a luxury limousine, and in Comfort mode it actually rides like one. In fact, it might be the best-riding car in the world right now, possibly better, even, than the Rolls-Royce Phantom, though I'd want to drive them back-to-back over the same roads before making a definitive call. You can quibble about the form—both the Rolls-Royce Phantom and the Bentley Mulsanne are unquestionably more charismatic and distinctive designs than the Maybach's supersized S-Class meme—but in purely functional terms the big-daddy Mercedes is... For those who care, the Maybach S600 nails 60 mph in 4. 8 seconds, and the quarter mile in 13. 2 seconds at 110. 9 mph, which means it's quicker than a Bentley Mulsanne Speed. It's also eight-tenths of a second quicker around our figure eight than the hulking Bentley. Mercedes offers the choice of Comfort and Sport transmission modes, and in Comfort the Maybach will ooze away from a standstill in second gear, just like Benzes always used to.
