First drive: 2016 Jaguar XF 2.0 i4D 180 R-Sport auto - Birmingham Post

The unveiling of the XF will forever be seen as a key moment in Jaguar’s transformation into a modern car maker. Seven years later, Jag’s model line-up is unrecognisable – and far better for it. And now it’s time for the XF itself to be transformed, with a new model which, despite looking familiar, has been totally revised. By as much as 190kg, thanks to a new aluminium platform and the latest engines from Jag Land Rover’s recently opened Wolverhampton factory. We’ve got the latter here, bolted to an eight-speed auto, which returns 65. 7mpg and puts out 114g/km of CO2. Our tester is in R-Sport spec, which sits in the middle of Jag’s model line-up. Some of the switchgear seems a little out of place, but overall the step forward from the previous XF is clear. The four-cylinder engine puts in an unwelcome appearance, however, when you get on the throttle. The rest of us will just turn up the loud bits from La Traviata or the Dead Kennedys and get on with it. And the XF won’t let us down. Its new platform is adapted from the one beneath the XE, and that vehicle’s handling skills weren’t lost in the process. Jag says the new XF is 28% stiffer than before, and when.
