Dennoch war der 331 kW/450 PS starke Turbo so begehrt, dass die limitierte Auflage schon vor Serienstart vergriffen war und bereits die ersten gebrauchten 959 mit Aufpreis gehandelt wurden. Was Bugatti (EB 110), Ferrari (F40), Jaguar (XJ 220) und andere animierte, wenig später einen Supercar-Hype auszurufen. Seine Technik und seine prominenten Käufer aus Sport, Show und Finanzwelt machten ihn legendär. Fast doppelt so teuer wie der Ferrari Testarossa brachte der Deutsche das überschäumende Temperament der Gruppe-B-Rallye-Renner in alltagsgerechte Form und auf die Straße. Mit elektronischem Allradantrieb, tempoabhängig regelndem Stoßdämpfersystem und reichlich Renntechnik brannte der Bolide die Beschleunigungsbestzeit von 3,9 Sekunden in die Bahn.
