Toyota claims its Tacoma pickup truck has been the segment’s best-seller for the past decade, and though we don’t doubt their figures, we’ll note that the midsize field was running a bit lean for much of that time. The 2016 Toyota Tacoma , which has just made its debut at the Detroit auto show , arrives just in time to help the nameplate maintain its pack-leading sales status. As with the new Nissan Titan , which also made its debut in Detroit, buyers of the Toyota Tacoma will have five trims to choose from: the basic SR, the SR5, the TRD Sport, the TRD Off-Road and the plush Limited. TRD Off-Road trucks get a hefty range of -- you guessed it -- off-road-oriented features like a limited slip locking rear differential and Toyota’s crawl control system (think of it as a low-speed cruise control for trail running). The Tacoma’s list of available options is long, including everything from a tri-fold hard tonneau cover for the bed to leather-trimmed seats to a variety of wheels to blind spot monitors to push-button start. moved 5,600 4Runners in September -- 2,400 more than last year. The Jeep Grand Cherokee -- another sort of old school off roadie type SUV -- still beats the 4Runner like a drum though, with 136,000 sold this year so far. This orange TRD Pro 4Runner is a bit over the top for an old fart like me. I about pulled my groin every time I got in it. Once hoisted on up in there, it is fine, though. The five-speed transmission (a five-speed. Talk about old school) is smooth and the ride is OK -- it can get bouncy, though I’m guessing that’s down to the TRD equipment, eh. Didn’t go off-road but would like to -- I suspect with the big tires and off-road shocks and skid plates it would... The 4Runner is 30 this year and according to toyota. 4Runner TRD Pro. I would go with something a little more traditional, like white, which some may find a little boring but that’s what I would do. It would look rather wicked with the black grille, in my opinion, without appearing too over the top. The $42,000 question is if this TRD Pro version of the 4Runner worth it. Revealed at the 2015 Detroit Auto Show, the new 2016 Tacoma will be available with an all-new 3. 5-liter V6 Atkinson cycle engine that uses Toyota’s D-4S technology, featuring both direct and port fuel injection. Based on the 3. 5-liter V6 in other Toyota applications, the engine is expected to produce roughly 300 HP and 280 lb-ft of torque. “Based on the 3. 5-liter V6 in other Toyota applications,” is the answer to your question. Those are roughly the numbers found in the Lexus RC350, which also uses a 3. 5-liter V6 with D4S. Odds are the engine will be tuned for more low-end torque for the Tacoma, but it will probably sit somewhere in the vicinity of those numbers. Generally for truck engines they bias them towards torque production (lower peak HP numbers, torque comes in earlier on). It has to make as much HP as the existing 1GR so people don’t see it as a downgrade (so 245hp on 87 octane, 285 on 91). It... Source: www.autoguide.com
