It’s interesting how Toyota eased into the full-size-truck market in the U. S. After years of building small pickups, the company introduced the slightly larger T-100 for 1993, adding the Xtracab extended-cab model in 1995. The darling of... Almost as if the T-100 had served some perceived apprenticeship, Toyota introduced the still-larger Tundra in 2000, with an available 4. 7-liter V-8, and in 2004, a Double Cab model with four real, front-hinged doors. Tough and, for many consumers, pretty right-sized, this Tundra lasted through 2006. Then, with the apprenticeship presumably complete, Toyota allowed itself to build a full-on, whopper-sized pickup for 2007 , figuring on three things: that, with... Even if it knew internally that it would never approach Ford or GM sales figures, Toyota still made a few strategic errors in launching the Tundra. Although Toyota recently redesigned the full-size Tundra, the truck features essentially the same mechanical components as its predecessor. This means that a comfortable ride, respectable power and relatively precise handling remain Tundra hallmarks, but the competition has pulled ahead in terms of interior quality and fuel efficiency. For the latest model year, the Toyota Tundra gets a new TRD Pro Series trim level aimed at hardcore off-road enthusiasts. Styled at Toyota's Calty design center in California, the Tundra's exterior is marked by rugged lines and an enormous - some might say overlarge - front grille. It's rated at 15/19 mpg with RWD and 14/18 mpg with optional 4WD. Finally, the top-spec 5. 7-liter V8 churns out an impressive 381 horsepower and 401 lb-ft of torque but ekes out just 13/18 mpg and 13/17 mpg with RWD and 4WD, respectively. On the plus side, the Tundra is a capable towing machine, with the 5. 7-liter V8 model maxing out at 10,400 lbs. Furthermore, the Tundra's tow ratings are devised using the demanding SAE J2807 standard - other automakers use internal testing criteria to determine towing capability, making independent verification impossible.
