BREMERTON — For veterans to receive benefits they’ve earned, they often need to travel, an ability Bremerton’s Disabled American Veterans chapter has become adept at supplying. A 2002 Buick Park Avenue given to Puget Sound Veterans Hope Center Monday was the fourth vehicle they donated this year. Puget Sound Veterans Hope Center, an offshoot of the Tacoma Rescue Mission, was founded on the principle of veterans helping veterans. “You’ve got folks really working hard on behalf of our veterans. A resource like this can be really helpful in making sure veterans have access to the care they need and have earned. Tacoma Rescue Mission board member Larry Geringer and friends for years have been helping vets access their benefits. “The problem is we don’t have any transportation to get them to the VA (hospital at American Lake) and the VA won’t provide it,” said Geringer, who served 26 years in the Air Force and 26 more at Boeing. A Perkins Avenue convenience store was broken into for the second time in as many weeks, but police do not believe the incidents are related. , was entered at about 4:30 a. m. Sunday, according to a Perkins police report. The suspect, who was masked, was seen on surveillance using a chunk of asphalt to break through one of the store's front glass doors. Investigators later found a kitchen knife on a counter near an office door, but were unsure if it was used to make entry to the office. Just a few minutes prior to the break-in, a newspaper carrier made a delivery at the store and spotted the possible suspect on the property. Police further identified a 1998 Ford Ranger as possibly being related to the incident, according to the report. 12, a thief busted through the store's other front glass door and made off with multiple cartons of cigarettes.
