N ick Razes is 76 years old and still hot rodding. He lives in Benicia with his classic car collection. I’ve been a hot rodder since the early 1950s. My first car was an old 1950 Mercury flathead. I loved the car, but it was very heavy and slow. I bought my second car late in 1956, a brand new Chevrolet Bel Air 2-door hardtop V8 with a four-barrel carburetor and overdrive. You could get a cheeseburger and a coke for 37 cents, and a new house would run you about $10,000. My ’56 Chevy cost $3,200 at the time, and it was very quick. I raced it for a couple of years and became the co-founder of a local drag racing club known as the Slicks of Vallejo Car Club. We had lots of fast cars in our club, and we practically lived at the drags. We raced in Fremont, Lodi, Cotati, Half Moon Bay and at the night drags in Vacaville. My friends back then included Don Evans, a National Hot Rod Association record holder, and a Pomona Winter Nationals winner. I’ve owned, raced and restored many cars over the years, and I currently have quite a few. It needed new wiring and body work, even the floors were rusted out. He was conducting a freshwater fisheries inspection when he noticed a vessel tied off to the river wall that was sitting low in the water. Officer Baber called out to the female and asked if the vessel was taking on water. As Officer Baber moved toward the vessel, it immediately capsized throwing the elderly lady into approximately seven feet of water. Officer Baber swam to the lady in distress and safely pulled her back to shore. Officer Baber evaluated the lady for injuries and then helped secure the capsized vessel. Lieutenant Glover was on water patrol in the St. Johns River area of Shands Pier when he observed approximately one hundred fishermen throwing casts nets in participation of the yearly shrimp run in the St. Johns River. Upon inspection of one fisherman, Lieutenant Glover noticed what appeared to be freshwater game fish hidden in a bucket under the harvested shrimp. Lieutenant Glover questioned the subject about the freshwater game fish inside the bucket in which he admitted to taking them with a cast net. Lieutenant Glover issued a citation to the subject for illegally harvesting freshwater gamefish and a warning for an undersized black bass. Lieutenant Huff, Officers Nichols and Davenport responded to a call for assistance with the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office in the search of a missing 10-year old female in the FortWhite area.
