In 1535, French explorer Jacques Cartier discovered the Mingan Islands, between Anticosti Island and the Quebec mainland. In 1840, royal assent was given to an act which empowered the Canadian government to sell off public land set aside for the use of the church, with the proceeds going to the churches of England and Scotland. In 1840, Canada's first daily newspaper, "The Advertiser," was started in Montreal. In 1842, a joint commission headed by Daniel Webster for the United States and Lord Ashburton for Britain concluded a treaty between Canada and the United States to end the so-called "Aroostook" or lumbermen's war. The dispute, the result of a disagreement between lumbermen from New Brunswick and Maine over forest, had simmered through the 1830s until an armed clash occurred in 1839. Under terms of the treaty, the present-day boundary between Maine and New... In 1930, Canadian runner Percy Williams established a then-world record of 10:03 seconds for the 100 metres. Two years earlier, Williams won the 100 and 200 metres at the Amsterdam Olympics. DETROIT — As the sun beat down at Spirit of Hope Church in Detroit, Jeremy Smith, 16, sliced through a long tree branch in an alleyway near the house of worship. He was helping clear brush on Thursday, one of about 30,000 people in Detroit this week for a youth gathering of the biggest Lutheran group in the U. S. , Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). "It feels good to get out and help the community, help people," Smith said during a break. Smith and about 10,000 other Lutherans worked across metro Detroit on Thursday in service projects that helped the needy. Wearing orange-colored shirts, the Lutherans have been a big presence in downtown Detroit this week, holding nightly gatherings at Ford Field. At Spirit of Hope Church, a part Lutheran, part Episcopal church, volunteers from Iowa and California spent six hours cutting brush, hauling away used tires, and wheeling away debris. "The ELCA has a phrase, God's work, Our Hands, and this is the embodiment of that phrase," said Jimmy Sanborn, 17, of Fresno. Glenn Ford, exonerated death row inmate, dies SHREVEPORT, La. — Glenn Ford, who was exonerated last year after spending nearly 30 years of his life on death row for a crime he did not commit, died of lung cancer Monday, the Innocence Project New... ly/1IoRIco SHREVEPORT, La. — Glenn Ford, who was exonerated last year after spending nearly 30 years of his life on death row for a crime he did not commit , died of lung cancer Monday, the Innocence Project New Orleans announced. According to a news release, Ford died surrounded by friends and family at 2:11 a. m. CT in New Orleans. Ford's wrongful conviction would reignite national discussion about the death penalty after Shreveport Attorney A. M. "Marty" Stroud III, the lead prosecutor in Ford's trial, penned a letter apologizing for his role in Ford's conviction. In 1984, Ford was convicted of and sentenced to die for the Nov. Ford was 33 at the time of his conviction. According to the Innocence Project New Orleans, Ford spent 29 years, three months and five days of his life in solitary confinement on death row at Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola. On March 10, 2014, Ford was exonerated. The state of Louisiana gave him $20 for a bus ride home from prison but has denied him further compensation under the state's wrongful conviction compensation statute, the Innocence.
