• Ford Ranger Review - Research New & Used Ford Ranger ...

  They say that in the event of Armageddon, the only thing to survive will be cockroaches. Well, there's a good chance you'd see some old Ford Rangers cruising around, too. This compact pickup truck soldiered on with relatively few revisions for nearly three decades. Of course, there were styling and interior overhauls over the decades, but the platform and most mechanicals underneath it all were practically Jurassic. Even those styling and interior updates dated back to the 1990s.

  Older Rangers aren't quite as out of date compared to competitors of similar age. And given its wide choice of trim styles and lower pricing than comparable Japanese rivals, a well-maintained late-model Ford Ranger could be a good choice for a used pickup, provided you don't need a lot of passenger capacity or horsepower. But if you're looking for a relatively new used compact or midsize pickup, the Ford Ranger pales in comparison to other trucks with their more powerful engines, roomier crew-cab body styles and greater overall refinement.

  Used Ford Ranger ModelsThe most recent generation of the Ford Ranger was produced from 2001 through 2011 and typically came in four different flavors: XL, XLT, Sport, and the off-road-oriented FX4. Depending on the year, there were also the monochromatic Edge, sporty STX and sound system-centered Tremor. Only standard and extended cab body styles were offered, as there was still no crew cab version.

  Engine selection consisted of a 2.3-liter four-cylinder, a 3.0-liter V6 (until 2009) and a 4.0-liter V6. Output of the smaller engines varied slightly depending on year, with the 2.3 making 135-143 horsepower and the 3.0 making 148-154 hp. The 4.0 made 207 hp. Transmission choices included a five-speed manual and a five-speed automatic for all engines, though initially the 4.0-liter V6 came only with the automatic.

  Although nimble on- and off-road due to its true compact size, even this latest version of the Ranger was seriously dated in terms of features and available body styles. While its midsize rivals offered roomy crew-cab (four-door) models, more modern features and much more powerful V6 engines, the Ranger made do with standard and extended-cab configurations only, and relatively low-tech power plants.

  The second generation of the Ranger ran from 1993 through 2000. Styling was less blocky than the first-gen truck and the cabin was likewise updated with less angular forms. Standard and extended cab body styles were offered, but they were joined by a stylish, flareside bed version dubbed the Splash. Under the hood was the expected choice of a four- or six-cylinder engine. Notable changes throughout this generation are the availability of four-wheel antilock brakes in 1995, a five-speed automatic transmission (versus four-speed) for V6 models in '97 and freshened styling for '98.

  Introduced for 1983, the Ford Ranger started life as a standard-cab, four-cylinder compact pickup truck with a choice of two bed lengths. The mid-'80s saw the introduction of the extended-cab body style known as the "SuperCab," which offered jump seats that were best left to kids. The Ranger continued through the early '90s with minor upgrades to the powertrains and small cosmetic changes.

  The Ford Ranger is a nameplate that has been used on three distinct model lines of vehicles sold by Ford. Originally, the name was used by the short-lived Edsel Ranger car, then it later referred to a version of the Ford F-Series pickup truck sold in North America between model year 1965 and 1981 that denoted a styling package. Ford repurposed the name "Ranger" in 1982 for the 1983 model year for a compact pickup truck sold in North America and later parts of South America. Since 1998, Ford has offered a separate model of Ranger sold internationally.

  Americas (1983–2012 model years)[edit]

  Ford designed and engineered the North American version of the Ranger, which commenced manufacture in January 1982 for the 1983 model year and ended production in December 2011. For the 1995 model year, Ford exported the North American model to select Latin and South American countries; however, as demand increased, Ford began producing the model at its Argentinian plant. During the 1994 through 2010 model years, Mazda badge engineered this model as the North American "B-Series" replacing the "international" version of the Mazda B-Series that had previously been retailed in North America. During its 29-year production run, the Ranger received several updates: notably, the 1989 model year facelift, the introduction of the second-generation model for 1993, a 1998 model year facelift of the same, and several smaller second-generation cosmetic changes in the 2001, 2004, and 2006 model years. The Latin and South American version was re-skinned in 2009 for the 2010 model year, receiving all-new exterior sheet metal while retaining the existing body structure. On December 22, 2011, the last USA-built Ranger rolled off the St. Paul, Minnesota assembly line.[1]

  For markets outside of North America, Ford badge engineered the Japanese-built Mazda B-Series as the Courier starting in 1971, renaming it the Ranger in 1998; the Courier nameplate was retained in Australasia until 2006. The Courier was also sold in North America prior to the 1983 model year. Second-generation models from 2006 to 2011 were also designed by Mazda, being rebadged versions of the successor to the B-Series, the BT-50. Third-generation models, as produced since 2011, were designed and engineered by Ford Australia, with Mazda offering a derivative version of the Ford as the second generation BT-50. The Mazda truck is also the basis for the Ford Everest SUV and therefore, the Ranger and the Everest share a number of features.

  The new Ranger is offered with a range of Duratorq Stage V diesel engines: 2.2- and 3.2-liter four cylinders ranging from 123-197 hp and 235-346 lb-ft of torque. The Ranger is also available with a six-speed manual transmission and in a variety of body configurations.

  While its cabin isn’t as refined or spacious as rivals’, praiseworthy powertrain choices mean the 2010 Ford Ranger should not be overlooked.

  Reviewers said the 2010 Ford Ranger is a competent-handling truck with a generally comfortable ride on paved roads. However, some remarked that the ride with the available FX4 Off-Road package feels a bit jarring. Most critics preferred the Ranger’s available V6 engine for its added power and torque over the base four-cylinder engine, especially for towing and hauling. Still, most said that the base engine is fine for day-to-day driving, and it is also the more fuel-efficient engine. A rear-wheel drive Ranger achieves 19/24 mpg city/highway with the four-cylinder engine and an automatic transmission, which is comparable to a similarly-equipped Chevrolet Colorado or Toyota Tacoma. A manual transmission comes standard with both engines, and four-wheel drive was optional when the Ranger was new. The Ranger can tow up to 6,000 pounds, which is similar to what rivals like the Colorado can tow.

  The 2010 Ranger seats up to three with the regular cab body style and a bench seat or up to five with two additional jump seats in extended cab models. Reviewers found the front seats comfortable and supportive, but also wrote that the rear jump seats offer inadequate space for nearly everyone. Most critics noted that the Ranger’s dash and overall interior design feature lots of hard plastics. However, the bulk of test drivers appreciated that the design and control layout is simple and straightforward. The base Ranger XL comes with few creature comforts, including crank windows, air conditioning and a basic stereo. Available features include power accessories, keyless entry, cloth seats, an upgraded stereo with satellite radio and an auxiliary input jack and front bucket seats.

  Other Trucks to Consider

  The 2010 Nissan Frontier was well-liked by reviewers for its comfortable interior and smooth, potent V6 engine. The Frontier is also available as a crew cab, so it may be a better choice if you’re looking for a more passenger-friendly truck.

  Reviewers said the 2010 Toyota Tacoma is a strong all-around truck, with a quality interior and refined engine choices. The Tacoma Double Cab was billed as one of the more spacious crew cabs available, so it may be a better choice if you want more passenger space.
