For the six years since President George W. Bush left office, his party has turned its back on him. Bush spoke at neither the 2008 nor the 2012 Republican National Convention. Yet Bush may prove much harder to ignore at the party’s next convention: one of the most mentioned possibilities for the 2016 Republican presidential nominee is the ex-president’s brother, former Florida Governor Jeb Bush. The large donors who supported George W. Bush, John McCain, and Mitt Romney continue to hold sway within their party. Three big trends have decisively changed the Republican Party over the past decade, weakening its ability to win presidential elections and gravely inhibiting its ability to govern effectively if it nevertheless somehow were to win. First, Republicans have come to rely more and more on the votes of the elderly, the most government-dependent segment of the population -- a serious complication for a party committed to reducing government. Second, the Republican donor class has grown more ideologically extreme, encouraging congressional Republicans to embrace ever more radical tactics. Third, the party’s internal processes have rigidified, in ways that dangerously inhibit its ability to adapt to changing circumstances. In their General Election manifesto, the Conservatives had pledged to “improve rail connections to East Anglia, delivering Norwich in 90 minutes and Ipswich in 60 minutes”. Transport secretary Patrick McLoughlin told MPs that electrification work was being “paused” on the Midland mainline and the Transpennine route between Leeds and Manchester. But Mark Pendlington, who co-chairs the Great Eastern Rail Campaign, said the announcement did not change his intention to have the region’s required upgrades done over the course of the next decade, with “behind-the-scenes work” set to continue... In the announcement yesterday, Mr McLoughlin said he would bring about modern, faster trains to Ipswich and Norwich, through a new contract to operate the train line, which is expected to start in 2016. MPs said they would be putting pressure on... Ipswich MP Ben Gummer, a member of the East Anglian Rail taskforce since it was set up, said it would be necessary to keep up the pressure on NR to ensure the £1billion investment in the region’s rail service was safeguarded. • 1956 Ford Mainline | Hagerty – Classic Car Price Guide

  Ford introduced all-new models for 1952, beating rival Chevrolet to the punch by a full year. The Mainline became FoMoCo’s entry-level model, and it featured a more modern style than the basic Deluxe it replaced. Wraparound windshield, curved rear glass, a modified grille, and more ornamentation to break up the earlier “Shoebox” Ford’s slab sides gave the new Mainline a fresh look.

  The Mainline came standard with an overhead-valve six-cylinder that displaced 215 cid and made 101 hp. A 239-cid L-head engine was optional, and it used a two-barrel carburetor to create 110 hp. A three-speed manual transmission was standard, while overdrive and Ford-O-Matic were optional with either motor. Body styles included a business coupe, Tudor and Fordor sedans, and a two-door Ranch station wagon. The base price for a Tudor sedan in 1952 was $1,629.

  The 1953 Ford Mainline was largely the same as the previous year, with a slightly simpler grille and different side brightwork. Body choices and prices were essentially the same, as were powertrain choices. Power steering became a welcome option this model year.

  The 1954 model received a new suspension setup and a new engine tunes. The standard six-cylinder now produced 115 hp, while the optional V-8 now had 130 hp on tap. New convenience options included power brakes, windows, and front seat.

  The 1955 Ford Mainline was vastly different from the 1954 model. The grille was markedly new, as it no longer sported a spinner front. A plunging trim piece ran from the A-pillar to the rear of the car. The 1956 Mainline’s major development was the introduction of a 12-volt electrical system. The car also received more of the Thunderbird’s styling and air conditioning became optional, and the business coupe was removed from the lineup. The optional V-8 became the 173-hp, 272-cid unit, though the Ranch wagon’s V-8 choice was the 292-cid, 200-hp engine that was standard in the Thunderbird.

  The Ford Mainline was very popular, with more than one million making it to the road. Enthusiasts usually opt for the 1956 models due to their 12-volt systems and the power options those systems can support. Earlier cars are interesting and affordable as well, and any Mainline is relatively easy to maintain assuming rust and rot are kept in check. All in all, the car is an affordable way to experience a mainstream 1950s American car.

  Once again in 1952 Ford refreshed their car lines, although they remained similar to the all-new 1949 Fords while the model lines were reorganized. Introduced by the Ford Motor Company in the United States, the Mainline was debuted in 1952 until 1956 and introduced as the base trim level of the '52 Ford range below the Customline and Crestline models. The top of the line was the Crestline and included the Sunliner convertible, the Victoria hardtop and the Country Squire station wagon. The interior sported a 'flight-style' control panel and new panels that were suspended from below the dashboard. The grille featured a single center 'bullet' surrounded by a chrome ring along with 'jet intake' corner mares. During 1952 overdrive transmission option was available.

  For 1953 Ford added the availability of power-assisted brakes and steering (which had earlier been limited to Lincoln and Mercury lines). The corner markers were plain rectangular lights instead of the circular 'intakes' and the center grill bullet lost its ring and was now bordered by vertical black stripes. To mark Ford's 50th anniversary all 1953 Fords showcased commemorative steering wheels. This was also the final year for real wood trim on the Country Squire wagon. With a dummy Continental tire, William Clay Ford paced the Indianapolis 500 in a Sunliner convertible.

  In 1954 the long-standing Flathead V8 engine was replaced this year with an overhead valve Y-block unit, marking the end of an era. This unit produced 130 hp with a 2-barrel carburetor and a thrilling 160 hp with a Holley four-barrel in the official use-only law enforcement model. Also new this was the 'Crestline Skyliner' 2 door hardtop which came with an all new acrylic glass panel over the front half of the roof. An additional option that was quite popular was a snap-in sunshade. The Country Squire wagon (or 'woody') now utilized artificial fiberglass panels, but it still remained the priciest Ford.

  In the redesigned 1955 Ford range the Mainline maintained its position, but was dropped for the 1957 model year when the Custom became the all new base model. The Mainline was available in 2 or 4 sedan, 2 door coupe and 2 door station wagon body styles. Dubbed the Mainline Ranch Wagon, the station wagon was marketed as such until the 1955 model year when it lost its Mainline tag when all Ford wagons were moved to their own series. The Mainlines were available with both V8 engine and inline six cylinders. A first time option, Ford offered seat belts in this year, along with Ford's first factory installed air conditioner. Carried into the 1956 model year this 'Select Aire' option featured an integrated heater core and evaporator coil unit within the dash and cold air discharge vents that were located on top of the dash on both sides of the radio speaker. In later vehicles the condenser was mounted in front of the radiator. In 1955 the station wagons were offered as a separate series for the first time. The Country Sedan and Country Squire models were 4 door wagons and the Ranch Wagon and customer Ranch Wagon were 2 door wagons.

  For 1956 the eggcrate grill was widened into a series of rectangles, but this minor exterior change wasn't much in comparison to Ford's adoption of a 12-volt electrical system across the line. With only 603 units made, the Crown Victoria Skyliner's sales were disastrous and it would be replaced by a convertible the following year. The 'Town Victoria' joined the lineup halfway through the year, a 4-door hardtop meant to compete with the Chevrolet Bel Air along with the new Customline 2-door hardtop. New this year was the Lifeguard safety package, which consisted of seat belts, a breakaway rearview mirror and a padded dashboard. Unfortunately this package was a slow-seller. Air conditioning was also optional, and an expensive one at that, remained a slow-selling option and was revamped this year. The compressor was now housed beneath the hood and the cooling vents were moved to the top of the dashboard.

  The Mainline name was used in Australia on a locally developed 2 door coupe utility version of the Ford Customline sedan in 1952 until 1955. The vehicle used an imported Ford V8 convertible chassis with an added cross member for additional load carrying strength. The Australian Mainline was sold alongside the Australian built Customline sedan which were both given yearly updates until production ceased in 1959. Until the introduction of the OHV V8 in the redesigned 1955 series the Mainline Utility was powered by an Australian produced version of the Ford side valve V8 engine. A very limited number of Customline wagons were built. The final series used a grille from the 1955 Canadian Meteor. In 1959 production ended with the introduction of the 1959 US Ford which was locally producing Fairlane 500, Custom 300 and Ranch Wagon models.

  The Ford Mainline is an automobile which was produced by Ford in the United States in the models years 1952 to 1956.[1] It was introduced as the base trim level of the 1952 Ford range below the Customline and Crestline models.[2] The Mainline retained its position in the redesigned 1955 Ford range [3] but was dropped for the 1957 model year when the Ford Custom became the new base model.[4]

  The Mainline was offered in 2-door sedan, 4-door sedan, 2-door coupe and 2-door station wagon body styles.[5] The station wagon was marketed as the Mainline Ranch Wagon [6] until it lost its Mainline tag for the 1955 model year when all Ford wagons were moved to their own series.[7] Mainlines were available with both inline six-cylinder and V8 engines.[8]

  In Australia the Mainline name was applied to a locally developed 2-door coupé utility version of the Ford Customline sedan from 1952.[9] The Mainline utilized an imported Ford V8 convertible chassis [10] with the large X-member for additional load carrying strength.[11] It sold alongside the Australian built Customline sedan, with both given yearly updates until production ceased in 1959.[12] The coupe utility slot in Ford Australia's lineup was filled by the first Ford Falcon utility the following year. The Mainline Utility was powered by an Australian produced version of the Ford side-valve V8 engine [13] until the introduction of the OHV V8 in the redesigned 1955 series.[14]
