The Tahoe is still a full-size, body-on-frame boat hauler that rules the big-SUV set, but thoroughly revised inside and out. There’s ample cargo room, but a high load floor impedes access to it. Instrumented Test – 2015 Chevrolet Tahoe LTZ 4WD “It’s a bit like driving a shipping container,” said our U. K. -based passenger. If you’d never driven a Chevy Tahoe , you, too, might be shocked by its gargantuan size and 5756 pounds. Shipping containers are spacious and useful, though, and so is the new Tahoe. Big on this scale means you don’t have to bother organizing your dog kennels, antique firearms, and stuffed elephants. A console as big as a coffee table keeps the driver and front passenger from violating any restraining orders. All that bigness is born of the Tahoe’s full-size pickup origins. Chevy introduced a redesigned Silverado last year , and the Tahoe inherits the many structural enhancements that Chevy bestowed upon its reborn pickup. New body and boxed-frame designs improve structural rigidity, and a higher percentage of high-strength steel helps keep the weight in check. OUR TAKE: Nice to see GM took two of the thousand hybrid labels off the truck, removing the huge lettering from the bottom of the doors. These big GM trucks float along the highway nicely, and this one is no exception. Once the powertrain is warmed up, the engine shuts off at lights, then the truck starts on electric power immediately upon touching the gas pedal. The transmission is smooth, especially on the freeway where the hybrid powertrain is seamless. they tend to be grabby when you least expect it. Aside from the brakes, the real downer in the Tahoe hybrid is that sticker price. Youll have to drive a lot of miles to make up $10,000 difference between this and a garden variety Tahoe at the pump. 2009 Chevrolet Tahoe 4WD Hybrid. As-tested price: $56,500. Drivetrain: 6. 0-liter V8. 4WD, two-mode electric-hybrid transmission. Output: 332 hp @ 5,100 rpm, 367 lb-ft @ 4,100 rpm. Source: autoweek.com
