Drivers of Mercedes-Benz’s new E-Class sedan will have to get used to a startling feeling: the steering wheel moving in their hands as it pilots motorways and country lanes by itself. The technology packing the vehicle shows how quickly automated driving systems have advanced since 1998, when the Mercedes S-Class first featured cruise control that could adjust its speed to follow a car in front. Self-driving systems are among many areas in which Daimler’s Mercedes is working to gain an edge on Volkswagen AG’s Audi and Munich-based BMW AG. Currently No. 3 in luxury-car sales, Daimler is fighting to take the lead in the segment by 2020.... The E-Class, which competes with the BMW 5-Series, Audi A6 and Lexus GS, is Mercedes’s bread-and-butter luxury sedan. Offering options more advanced than those in the flagship S-Class shows how much Daimler is raising the stakes in their battle to reclaim the top spot in high-end cars. Fiat is spinning off Ferrari later this year, losing its top luxury brand. Ferrari’s power, prestige and profits have helped bankroll the more pedestrian Dodges, Jeeps, Fiats and Chryslers that account for most of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV’s revenue. Betting that Maserati can play a similar role, Marchionne is adding an SUV and coupe to the model lineup and opening plush U. S. dealerships from Westport, Connecticut, to San Jose, California. “Maserati is very important,” Marchionne said in an interview. After the Ferrari spinoff , “Maserati becomes the most coveted, exclusive brand that we have. Maserati’s reputation for performance is well established, and luxury autos are selling briskly in the U. S. But that segment of the market is crowded and aggressively contested by Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Audi and Lexus. For Marchionne to succeed, wealthy Americans will have to see Maserati’s $69,800, entry-level Ghibli sedan as a viable alternative to the BMW 5 Series or Mercedes E-Class. Through April, vehicle sales fell 9 percent to 7,306. First-quarter profit sank 39 percent to $40 million, a decline Fiat attributed to a slowdown in China. ‘Bit Aggressive’ “Some of the dealers, with the help of Maserati, got a little bit aggressive on discounting that vehicle, so it kind of lost its Maserati coolness,” said Mark Akbar of AutoNation Inc. South Carolina AD Ray Tanner calls for removal of Confederate flag - Charleston Post Courier

In the wake of the shootings at Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, South Carolina athletic director Ray Tanner has lent his voice to those calling for the removal of the Confederate flag on the Statehouse grounds in Columbia. Tanner sent out this post on Twitter on Monday: “It is time to remove the flag. Nikki Haley on Monday asked the state legislature to remove the Confederate glag from Statehouse grounds. USC football coach Steve Spurrier has long been on record against flying the flag on Statehouse grounds. In 2007, Spurrier said, “If anybody were to ever ask me about that damn Confederate flag, I would say we need to get rid of it. I’ve been told not to talk about that. But if anyone were ever to ask me about it, I certainly wish we could get rid of it. ”. USC president Harris Pastides also has called for the flag to come down. “Any flag that contradicts everything our Country flag represents, it shouldn’t fly. In 2000, a quartet of USC and Clemson coaches -- Lou Holtz and Eddie Fogler for the Gamecocks, and Tommy Bowden and Larry Shyatt for the Tigers -- marched in protests against the Confederate flag flying on top of the Statehouse dome.
