Green Car Reports writer John Voelcker brings us the story of some frustrated i3 owners, who’ve apparently unlocked the extra half-gallon of fuel capacity and some additional capabilities using a software cheat code being shared on BMW forums. According to these hackers, the software is the only thing holding back that extra half-gallon, which amounts to around 20 extra miles by forum users’ reckoning. Other functions that the hacky BMW fans have been able to unlock include a “hold battery charge” mode that conserves battery energy by relying more heavily on the gasoline engine, a feature that’s enabled on European-market i3s and meant to be... While most other plug-ins try to look like conventional cars, the i3 proudly boasts its eco-oddness on the inside and out. The gray body, underscored with a BMW blue stripe at the door bottoms, is made of thermoplastic panels and doors, one quarter of which are made from recycled materials or renewable sources. Instead, the rear door is hinged toward the back of the car, and the front and rear doors swing out like French doors. The extra tank capacity is good for around 20 more miles of driving range between fill-ups once the battery is exhausted. BMW had implemented a similar feature for the US-spec model, following complaints from a Consumer Reports driver , but drivers were not given manual control of the battery-charge hold.
