Alpina founder Burkard Bovensiepen developed a twin Weber kit to energize the drowsy BMW 1500 sedan in 1962, half a century ago. The first American Alpina was a version of the Z8 roadster with an automatic transmission , not what we’d call a great start. Then came a series of B7s based on BMW’s 7-series, first with the old Bangle-butt E65 in 2007 , then the current, sleeker F01 in 2010. Even with base prices of $128,495 for the rear-drive, short-wheelbase B7 and $135,395 for the AWD stretched... However, with Alpina’s annual U. S. sales at fewer than 500 units, this particularly elegant and sporty version of the 7-series will remain a rare bird. The result is that horsepower has grown from 500 to 540, while peak torque swells from 516 pound-feet to 538. As with all stock 7-series, the B7 also gets a version of the new ZF eight-speed automatic, which Alpina reinforces and reprograms to... Luckily, BMW tuning partner Alpina has been building such a car, the Alpina B7 for years. That’s 40 more hp and 22 lb-ft more than the 2012 model, and 140 hp and 88 lb-ft more than a non-turbocharged BMW 750i. Alpina says a B7 equipped with BMW’s xDrive all-wheel drive system will accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 4. 3 seconds and on to a... The rest of the B7 needed to me tweaked to handle the increased power, and to make it appreciably sportier than a non-Alpina 7 Series. The 2012 B7’s six-speed automatic is replaced by a reinforced version of the eight-speed used in other BMWs. These wheels are an Alpina trademark, and are a massive 21 inches in diameter on the 2013 B7. Many BMWs come with run-flat tires, but Alpina thought they would compromise the B7’s sporty character. The BMW Alpina B7 is fairly well-liked within the halls of C/D headquarters. Basically a BMW 7-series with more power, more interior dressing, and even better handling, the Alpina-fettled 7 boasts an intoxicating mix of grace and athleticism. And now that the 7-series has been updated for 2013 , so has the B7. Before you ask, yes, Alpina managed to extract even more power from BMW’s twin-turbocharged V-8, and, yes, it still rides on gorgeous 21-inch wheels with Alpina’s signature... Alpina, for those not in the know, is more or less a semi-independent extension of BMW that churns out tuned versions of that company’s wares—cars like the B3 , B5 , and B6. The B7 is the only Alpina product offered in the States. It’s been said more than once that Alpina’s B7 sedan is what an M-badged 7-series would be, given the car’s extensive upgrades. The B7’s twin-turbo 4. 4-liter V-8 gets BMW’s Valvetronic variable valve-lift system, which helps boost output by 40 hp and 22 lb-ft of torque over last year’s B7. The new totals are 540 hp and 538 lb-ft. (The regular 7’s V-8 received the same Valvetronic upgrade and gained 45 hp and 30 lb-ft of torque for totals of 445 hp and 480 lb-ft.
