The Smart Home app from Deutsche Telekom is an Apple iOS-based application which can be integrated into a BMW i3 or any other BMW vehicle with BMW ConnectedDrive Services – as can the Samsung SmartThings app developed for Android devices, on... BMW is giving both apps their in-car world premiere, underlining its flexibility in linking applications for the two leading mobile operating systems seamlessly with its cars. Like the extended news app from n-tv – another new arrival – these apps for connected houses can be operated using the iDrive Controller and viewed on the Control Display. The GoPro app for operating the brand’s small and robust cameras can also be operated from inside a BMW and is on show at the GoPro Stand (Hall 3. 2/201). So when the local government in Dartmouth, Massachusetts – a town on the southeast coast of the Bay State – announced that it would purchase a handful of BMW i3 electric cars for official use, it may have raised the blood pressure of some... Yet the local officials who will be driving these electric cars claim the i3 was the most sensible choice, according to The Boston Globe. BMW was reportedly one of only two brands offering an electric-car lease (the other was Nissan), which officials viewed as a requirement. They claim it allowed Dartmouth to receive greater state and Federal aid, helping to lower the overall cost of the cars. Massachusetts is one of nine states to adopt California’s stricter emissions standards, but not that state’s zero-emission vehicle mandate. Consequently, not every electric-car model currently in production is sold there, although certain limited-availability models – including the Mercedes-Benz B-Class Electric Drive and Volkswagen e-Golf – are. The i3 starts at $43,395 (including destination) for the all-electric version, while two-year leases for individual private consumers start at $269 per month, with $3,000 down. Source: ecomento.com

The ??? 2014 BMW i3 electric car performs so much better in its battery-powered mode than when the gasoline-powered generator kicks in to extend the car's range that testing one is almost like reviewing two different cars. But the extended-range mode that lets you drive beyond the battery's limit, is severely limited, both in how far the car can travel and in how long it'll take you to get there. The i3 is the smaller, less expensive and by far the funkier of the first two cars from BMW's i brand of electric vehicles. The i3 competes primarily with electric cars like the Nissan Leaf and extended-range electrics like the Chevrolet Volt and Cadillac ELR. A pure EV offers only battery power, while the extended-range model adds a 650cc two-cylinder engine to generate electricity when the lithium-ion batteries are drained. The battery-only i3 starts at $42,400. The extended range model starts at $46,250. I tested an extended range i3 with a backup camera, parking sensors, voice recognition, Bluetooth compatibility, 20-inch alloy wheels, heated front seats,... The i3's EPA-estimated battery range of 72 miles trails only the Leaf's 84. Next up come the Volt at 38 and 37 miles, respectively.
