DETROIT (AP) — Mazda is recalling nearly 540,000 older cars and pickup trucks in the U. S. and Canada, adding to the growing list of models under recall for air bags that potentially can explode with too much force. The Japanese automaker said in documents posted Friday by U. S. and Canadian safety regulators that it is recalling nearly 503,000 cars to fix driver’s air bags and 35,000 small pickup trucks to fix passenger air bags. Affected models with potentially faulty driver’s air bags are the 2003-2008 Mazda 6, 2006 to 2007 MazdaSpeed 6 and the 2004 to 2008 RX-8. The company also is recalling 2004-2006 B-Series pickup trucks to replace passenger side inflators. Last year Mazda recalled about 330,000 cars in the U. S. to fix driver’s air bags. The vehicles are equipped with air bag inflators made by Takata Corp. Last month Takata and the U. S. government agreed to double the number of inflators it recalled to 33. 8 million. Tokyo — Toyota Motor Corp. and Nissan Motor Co. are expanding their recalls over problem air bags made by Japanese supplier Takata Corp. Toyota said Wednesday it was recalling nearly 5 million more vehicles globally for the air bag inflater problem. The recall affects 35 models globally, including the Corolla subcompact, RAV4 sport utility vehicle and Tundra pickup, produced from March 2003 through November 2007. In the latest recall, front passenger and front driver-side air bag inflaters... This is different from an earlier problem with Takata air bag inflaters that deployed with too much force, which has affected a range of automakers including Honda Motor Co. , Chrysler, BMW and Ford Motor Co. At least six people have died... When combined with the earlier recalls, Toyota's Takata-related recalls have ballooned to 8. 1 million vehicles. Tokyo-based Honda, which has recalled the most vehicles because of Takata air bag problems, said it was studying the new problem and hasn't made a decision yet about expanding its recalls.
