Toyota’s Tundra TRD Pro is off-road ready right off the dealer lot. ASSOCIATE EDITOR GRAHAM KOZAK: What the 2015 Toyota Tundra TRD Pro can’t do, what the Tundra TRD Pro isn’t really trying to do, so far as I can tell, is compete with full-sized American trucks where interior refinement is concerned. Its typical mismatch of odd Toyota-spec materials and textures aren’t bad or particularly offensive in this rugged application -- but they’re not as nicely considered or assembled as something comparable out of Detroit. Where this truck surprises is powertrain refinement. I’m not sure how or why the 5. 7-liter plays so nicely with the six-speed auto, but this is Toyota Avalon -slick (yes, that’s a compliment). There’s a lot about this Tundra that reminds me of, say, my Jeep Wagoneer. On the whole, it’s easy to adapt and adjust to. So, is what Toyota’s doing with these TRD Pro trucks at all sensible. This Tundra has a sticker price of $42K, which is a lot to the average buyer -- but probably not a lot to someone looking to build a lifted, off-road capable truck. Source: autoweek.com

But last week, it was time for me to see “how the other half lives” by driving a working man’s Toyota Tundra SR5 Double Cab. Though it competes against the Chevrolet Silverado Double Cab like the one we tested a few months ago, the interior packaging is much better on the Tundra — at least where rear passenger space is concerned. The thing about the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado Double Cab was its tiny rear door openings made ingress and egress from the back seat difficult. Cut to last week in the Toyota Tundra SR5 Double Cab, and it was a night and day difference. I didn’t have to contort myself to climb in or out of the back row of seats, and I had plenty of room to wrestle my son’s child safety seat into that back row. Those are both things I couldn’t say for the Chevrolet Silverado Double Cab we tested last fall. Toyota’s own Tundra comparison tool says the Tundra SR5 Double Cab only has 0. 1 inch of extra.
