Until this year, NASCAR placed officials in each of the 43 pit-road boxes to make sure the crews obeyed the rules. At Sonoma Raceway, 49 high-definition video cameras are mounted on scissor lifts to watch what happens on pit road during Sunday’s Toyota/ Save Mart 350. To the untrained eye, what happens in a pit box looks like chaos — seven men in helmets and... Somebody adds fuel, others change tires, and others make adjustments in a choreographed routine orchestrated by a crew coach. In addition to removing officials from harm’s way, the Pit Road Officiating system is an attempt to judge possible fouls more fairly and more accurately. They say that after an initial spike in penalties over the first few races this season, the rate of infractions is about the same as it was last year. Chad Little , managing director of NASCAR technological inspection and officiating, showed The Chronicle how the system works Friday in a tour of the large trailer truck parked on a hill overlooking the track. The computer makes an initial call, resulting in an audible “ding” when, for example, a crew member jumps over the wall too soon. The system is used not only in the Sprint Cup series but also NASCAR’s Xfinity and truck series. It was tested in the last 11 races of last year’s Cup season. Source: www.sfgate.com

Every time I take my 2007 Mercedes Benz ML350 to the dealer, I am amazed by the high maintenance cost. The first time I got an oil change, I was charged for two oil filters, both of which were “fleece” filters. I pointed out what I thought was an error for charging me for two filters, but they told me that my engine has two. This past week I took the car in, and they said one shock absorber was leaking and needed replacing, but both should be replaced at the same time. The cost for replacing two rear shocks was an astronomical $1,200. About half was labor and the other half parts. When you buy a “luxury” car, part of the deal is that you’re going to pay luxury prices for maintenance and repair — especially at the dealership. If you had, say, a Ford Explorer, your bill for two shocks would have been $600. But, of course, then you wouldn’t have the prestige of paying twice as much for the Mercedes shocks. While you still might want to go to the dealer for anything unusual or complicated — since the dealer knows these cars better than anybody — there’s no reason that Dieter and Fritz down at German Auto and Hummel Figurine Emporium can’t do your oil... And they’ll do it cheaper than the dealer will. They’ll still have to buy certain Mercedes parts from a nearby dealer. Source: www.sfgate.com

Jerrel Stancil, Mission: The 6-foot-1, 175-pound quarterback for the San Francisco Section champion Bears was the Academic Athletic Association Player of the Year after leading his team to nine straight wins to close the season. On a squad filled with playmakers, Stancil was the most prolific, especially in Mission’s biggest game, a 36-12, section-clinching win over Lincoln in the 91st Turkey Day Game. Stancil, who accounted for more than 3,000 yards and 30 touchdowns this season, completed 17 of 23 passes for 318 yards and four touchdowns. Anthony Gordon, Terra Nova-Pacifica: The 6-3, 180-pound senior had the greatest statistical season for a quarterback in Central Coast Section history, throwing for section records of 4,899 yards (sixth best in the nation) and 49 touchdowns. His biggest outing came in a 56-35 win over Menlo School-Atherton when he completed 24 of 30 for 513 yards and six touchdowns. He led Terra Nova (7-6) to the CCS Division IV championship by throwing for 1,071 yards and 14 touchdowns in three playoff games. Terra Nova’s Tim Adams— who coached Tom Brady at Serra-San Mateo — called Gordon the best high school quarterback he has seen.
