As our appetite for SUVs shows no signs of abating, car companies are finding new ways to part people with even more money. A n ormal Porsche Cayenne with a V6 diesel can be had for $106,000. That’s still a power of money for an SUV you’d be afraid to scratch. There are several other opportunities to separate you from your wallet on the way to the flagship Cayenne Turbo, which is an eye-watering $233,300. But this model is on another level. This is the Cayenne Turbo S, and that tiny S badge adds a thumping $51,400 to the price, bringing the total to $284,700. . That works out to be $306,000 drive-away. The price premium buys more power (of course) and you spend 0. 4 seconds less time getting to the speed limit than you would in the regular Cayenne Turbo. Indeed, while I would heartily recommend those with the means go all the way, there really is no need if you want reasonable performance and Porsche-like handling and have hopes of a sustainable retirement fund. The V-6 does lack the adjustable-height suspension and suspension-tuning toys found on higher models. Instead, you have four choices: on-road or off-road and sport-tuned suspension and comfort-tuned suspension. But make no mistake, this is a Porsche, so even in comfort mode, the suspension is tight and responsive. It competes favourably with rivals such as the Mercedes ML and BMW X5. Now Cayenne drivers are being asked to keep the environmental regulators at bay also, by buying a plug-in hybrid version. The latest addition to the Porsche line-up is also the world's first plug-in hybrid SUV from a luxury brand. With an electric-only range of 18km-36km, it gives inner-city folk the opportunity to claim a zero-emissions commute when people tut-tut at the hulking SUV on their driveway. The purists took quite a while to get over the thought of a Porsche SUV and a bit longer to get over the thought of a diesel Porsche, so a plug-in hybrid could be a stretch.
