My feelings were not unlike my reaction years ago when Porsche unveiled the Cayenne SUV. At the time I also wondered what they were smoking, because to me the name Porsche was synonymous with adrenalin-inducing sports cars. I believed a Porsche badge had no business adorning the hood of a four-door SUV. So a week ago, when Porsche contacted me to offer a test drive in its brand new Cayenne S E-Hybrid, naturally I was excited to try it out: It was a Porsche, and I was extremely curious to find out just what this whole electric business was all about. Pushing the car on the twisty road up to Broummana, not once did I feel the car lose its composure. it remained poised and inspired confidence, while the steering feel, exemplary compared to most other SUVs, let me feel fully connected to the road. Nominated for Canadian Green Car of the Year, the 2015 Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid would have made a fine getaway ride for Dorothy (AJ Bridel) and Toto (Flynn) of Drayton Entertainment's The Wizard of Oz in Cambridge. Porsche has pulled ahead on the plug-in hybrid front, being the only company with three on offer — the Panamera S E-Hybrid sedan, this Cayenne S E-Hybrid and the 918 Spyder hypercar, which won’t give you much change back from a one million dollar... This E-Hybrid, with a starting price of $87,700 (that’s $3,200 over the gas-only 420-hp turbo-V6 Cayenne S) brings a combined 416 hp and 435 lb-ft from its Audi-sourced supercharged 3. 0L V6 and 95-hp electric motor, a range of up to 35 km on... So what’s the difference between a regular hybrid and a plug-in hybrid. And a significantly bigger battery pack — in this case a 10. 8 kWh lithium-ion battery over the old 1. 7 kWh nickel-metal-hydride unit. With its greater battery capacity and more powerful electric motor, it can deliver a modest amount of emission free driving before the gas engine cuts in. But the most interesting model of them all, or at least the most unique, has to be the Cayenne S E-Hybrid. A plug-in hybrid SUV sounds like the most un-Porsche thing possible. The term plug-in hybrid immediately conjures up thoughts of cars like the Prius plug-in and Ford C-Max. But there is another world of plug-in hybrids that includes the McLaren P1 and Porsche’s own supercar, the 918 Spyder. Although this isn’t a supercar by any stretch of the imagination, the Cayenne E-Hybrid does take some technological inspiration from the 918. Get the Flash Player to see this player. E-ngine The E-Hybrid uses a 3. 0-liter supercharged V6 that makes 333 HP and 325 lb-ft. It’s fused to a 70 kW electric motor that on its own develops 95 HP and 229 lb-ft. Together, the two power plants combine to make a total of 416 HP and 435 lb-ft. That places the E-Hybrid pretty much on par with the regular Cayenne S power-wise.
