— Nissan is recalling over 10,670 Rogue Select and Murano SUVs in two actions, the vast majority to fix problems with the anti-lock braking systems. Nissan Murano About 10,570 model year 2015 Nissan Murano SUVs are equipped with anti-lock braking system actuators which can malfunction and cause a loss of vehicle control. Nissan says the solenoid valves in the actuators might have contamination that can keep the valves from completely opening or closing. The 2015 Nissan Murano recall should begin in August 2015. Nissan Buyers, Pay Attention: 2013 Rogue Renamed 2014 Rogue Select - The Car Connection

But most of those pale in comparison to a release that Nissan has issued involving the 2013 Nissan Rogue. If you're a fan of Nissan's popular compact crossover, you already know that the Rogue has been redesigned for the 2014 model year. Normally, the old Rogue -- the one from model year 2013 and earlier -- would be discontinued, with the remaining inventory sold off, sometimes at deep discounts. But in a very strange move, Nissan has announced plans to continue sales of the 2013 model, which will be renamed the "Rogue Select". Thus, as of November, Nissan shoppers will be able to buy the 2014 Rogue (i. e. the new one) or the 2014 Rogue Select (i. e. the old one). Why would Nissan do such a thing. Nissan's Fred Diaz simply states that the "Rogue Select will allow Nissan to continue its strong performance in the segment, which will only get stronger once the all-new, U. S. -built 2014 Rogue goes on sale. The 2014 Rogue Select will be manufactured in Kyushu, Japan, where it's been built for years. For the all-new 2014 Rogue, however, production will be shifted halfway across the globe, to Nissan's facility in Smyrna, Tennessee. That changeover could be causing hiccups -- hiccups that could potentially put the brakes on the Rogue's robust sales, which are up about 16 percent over 2012.   The 2014 Nissan Rogue Select is a simplified carryover of the previous model. With the all-new 2014 Rogue now on showroom floors, keeping the old model alive allows Nissan to offer budget-conscious buyers an affordable way to get into a smart, comfortable and capable compact SUV without breaking the bank. With a starting price just under $21,000, the Rogue Select is certainly affordable, and although it doesn't offer much in the way of optional equipment, the Rogue Select does include a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) good for up to 28 mpg on the highway. And though newer SUVs such as the Mazda CX-5 and Subaru Forester have mileage estimates that break into the low 30-mpg range, you can't get into one with an automatic transmission for less than $23,000.

  Driving Impressions Our time behind the wheel of the 2014 Nissan Rogue Select with all-wheel drive left us with mixed feelings. Nissan's 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine is tried and true, but it's falling...

  ... behind the competition in the areas of power and fuel economy. Off-the-line acceleration feels peppy, but overtaking slower traffic or climbing steep hills can prove challenging. Helping make the most of the Rogue Select's power is Nissan's excellent Xtronic CVT transmission. Because many consumers still are not used to the CVT's gearless operation, Nissan has built in artificial shift points that mimic the way a traditional 5-speed automatic would shift. Only when the throttle is held wide open does the CVT's true nature reveal itself, holding the engine rpm steady as the vehicle accelerates. On the road, the Rogue Select's Sentra underpinnings deliver a very car-like ride and the electric-assisted power steering returns proper feedback for accurately zipping through back road twists.

  Favorite Features

  REARVIEW MONITOROffered as part of the S Convenience package, the RearView monitor allows the driver to see objects directly behind the vehicle yet out of the sight of the rearview mirror.

  XTRONIC CONTINUOUSLY VARIABLE TRANSMISSIONNobody has been doing mass produced CVT transmissions as long as Nissan and they've perfected the formula. The Rogue Select's Xtronic CVT is smooth, quiet and eager to please, delivering maximum power and fuel economy.

  2014 Nissan Rogue Select Details

  Interior

  The 2014 Rogue Select's interior is characteristically Nissan, with simple and straightforward instruments, subtle seating fabric and lots of soft-touch finishes. The Rogue Select has a terrific set of comfortable contour-forming front seats and front-seat legroom is good for tall drivers, as is headroom. Unfortunately, the rear-seat passengers don't have the same luxury, especially when the front seats are pushed all the way back. Storage space is ample and includes an oversized glove compartment as well as a hidden cargo area behind the rear seat. The Rogue Select's large D-pillar, however, creates a sizable blind spot for the driver.

  Exterior

  

  Sharing its platform with the Nissan Sentra gives the 2014 Nissan Rogue Select the ride and handling of a car in the body of small SUV. The distinctive front grille and lower air intakes bear a slight resemblance to the larger Nissan Murano, and the plastic wheel covers are quite convincing as actual 5-spoke alloys. The large, sweptback D-Pillar might not do much for visibility, but it definitely gives the Rogue Select a more sporting appearance.

  Standard Equipment

  The 2014 Nissan Rogue Select is offered in only one trim. Standard equipment includes power windows, power door locks, power mirrors, variable wipers, 60/40-split rear seatbacks, a handy under-floor storage compartment, air conditioning, remote keyless entry and a 4-speaker audio system with an auxiliary audio port. As is the case with most Nissan models, the Rogue's steering wheel does not include a telescoping function. Standard safety equipment is comparable to most other small SUVs, but not exceptional.

  Optional Equipment

  Other than all-wheel drive, the only option package for the Rogue Select is the Convenience Package that adds a 4.3-inch display audio screen, USB interface, RearView Monitor, steering wheel controls for audio and cruise control, SiriusXM, two additional speakers, Bluetooth, a rear spoiler and roof rails.

  What's New for 2014

  The 2014 Nissan Rogue Select is actually the previous-generation Rogue continuing on unchanged apart from its new, longer name and shortened optional equipment list.

  Introduction

  Since it shares the showroom with its all-new successor, the 2014 Nissan Rogue Select might strike you as a compact crossover SUV that's wearing out its welcome. After all, choosing it over the new 2014 Nissan Rogue (reviewed separately) would be like picking the nearly expired milk over the freshest carton, right? Not exactly, as a good argument can be made for buying this "old" Rogue if you're on a strict budget. Sure, the redesigned Rogue offers a third-row seat, newer technology-based features and more cargo capacity. But there are plenty of people who just want the higher seating position, foul-weather driving confidence and added cargo space of a small crossover and will gladly trade higher-end perks for a considerably lower price point.

  So yes, the 2014 Rogue Select is actually the previous-generation Rogue, and as such carries its strengths and weaknesses. The former include a high-quality cabin, peppy acceleration, fairly athletic handling and distinctive styling. Downsides include a second-row seat that doesn't slide or recline, a continuously variable transmission (CVT) that drones during hard acceleration, and limited rearward visibility due to the Rogue Select's curvy styling. With its pared down options list, the Select doesn't offer luxuries like a navigation system or keyless ignition and entry, either. Lastly, it comes with just one engine, so you're out of luck if you want a stronger turbocharged four-cylinder or a V6.

  Obviously, Nissan is pushing the value angle here. And given its overall competence and a base price that's thousands less than other compact crossover SUVs, the Rogue Select presents a solid case for itself. Still, those who don't mind spending more will find a variety of tempting choices. If you're looking for a sportier drive, the 2014 Ford Escape and 2014 Kia Sportage are good options and both are available with strong turbocharged engines. There's also the more spacious and family-friendly 2014 Honda CR-V and the similarly well-rounded Toyota RAV4. All of these crossovers have significant advantages over this Nissan, but bargain hunters looking for a basic but still quite enjoyable small crossover should put the 2014 Nissan Rogue Select on their list.

  Body Styles, Trim Levels, and Options

  The 2014 Nissan Rogue Select is a five-passenger small crossover SUV available in a single "S" trim level.

  The Rogue Select S comes standard with 16-inch steel wheels, keyless entry, folding side mirrors, a tilt (but non-telescoping) steering wheel, air-conditioning, full power accessories, a 60/40-split-folding rear seat, a trip computer and a four-speaker sound system with a CD player and an auxiliary audio jack.

  The optional Convenience package adds a rear spoiler, roof rails, a rearview camera, cruise control, a lighted visor mirror, Bluetooth phone connectivity, a 4.3-inch display audio screen and an upgraded audio system with six speakers, satellite radio, an iPod/USB interface and steering-wheel-mounted controls.

  Powertrains and Performance

  The 2014 Nissan Rogue Select is available with either front- or all-wheel drive. It's powered by a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 170 horsepower and 175 pound-feet of torque. The lone transmission choice is a CVT. In Edmunds testing, a front-wheel-drive Rogue took just 8.6 seconds to reach 60 mph -- quick for a four-cylinder crossover.

  The Rogue Select's fuel economy is on par with the competition. The front-wheel-drive Rogue has EPA estimates of 25 mpg combined (23 city/28 highway), while the AWD variant drops slightly to 24 mpg combined (22/27).

  Safety

  The Rogue Select comes standard with antilock disc brakes, stability control, front-seat side airbags, full-length side curtain airbags and active front head restraints.

  In government crash tests, the Rogue Select earned four out of five possible stars for overall crash protection, with four stars for total frontal-impact protection and five stars for total side-impact protection. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety awarded the Rogue Select its highest rating of "Good" for moderate-overlap frontal-offset and side-impact protection and a second-best "Acceptable" for roof-strength integrity. In that agency's small-overlap frontal offset test, the Rogue scored a second-lowest "Marginal" rating. The Rogue's seat/head restraint design was rated "Good" for whiplash protection in rear impacts.

  In Edmunds brake testing, the Rogue Select came to a stop from 60 mph in a fairly short 121 feet.

  Interior Design and Special Features

  Given the 2014 Nissan Rogue Select's relatively low pricing, you'll probably be pleasantly surprised by its interior refinement. Comfortable seats, intuitive controls and high-quality materials are just a few of the cabin's highlights. A substantial center console bin, massive glovebox and a clever under-floor organizer help make up for a lack of open storage cubbies.

  You won't find a very fancy rear seat, however. Unlike some rivals, the Rogue's rear seat neither slides nor reclines, which limits its usefulness for growing families. With the seatbacks upright, the cargo bay offers 28.9 cubic feet of storage, a bit below average for the class. Folding the seats yields 59.7 cubes, considerably less than some competitors, though more than you'll find in a Hyundai Tucson.

  Driving Impressions

  The promise of crossovers lies in SUV versatility with passenger-car manners. The 2014 Nissan Rogue Select does one better; it drives like a car with capable handling. Road bumps and imperfections are absorbed with ease, highway stability is exemplary, and around turns, the Select feels nimble and secure. The 2.5-liter engine's power is adequate, but the unpleasant droning it produces during passing and merging maneuvers can grow annoying. The CVT is the culprit here, as it keeps engine revs high during hard acceleration.
