Massive road presence in Infiniti’s monster ute. EDITOR WES RAYNAL: I remember the big Infiniti QX56 we had in the long-term fleet. That one was a monstrosity and so is this 2014 Infiniti QX80, which is the vehicle formerly known as the QX56. Its giant size is both positive and negative. Positive because I like big trucks (love the Chevy Suburban for example), negative because it’s so freaking big…. The exterior is all Infiniti. I used this great big beast to haul people around over the weekend and everyone who got in it commented almost immediately about how nice the interior is. I even threw some teenagers in the way back and received no legroom complaints. Shifts are imperceptible, and get this thing up above 3,500 rpm and there’s actually some grunt (well, at least inline with other trucks weighing in at 5,500 big ones) and some hot rod-like sounds coming from the exhaust. I suppose in a truck this big and heavy that’s a positive. There’s really nothing you could do with the QX you couldn’t also do with a JX (now called QX60) except tow a bunch more with this. It will haul around 8,500 pounds, according to Infiniti. Source: autoweek.com

For 2014, Infiniti's land yacht gets a new letter-number designation — previously it was the QX56 — under the brand's "renaming" of its lineup. Appearance: The QX80 looks somewhat ungainly, with its high belt line and its not-quite-seamless mix of angles and curves. Lyra likens it to a Beluga whale — albeit one that rolls on 22-inch alloy wheels and has a large chrome-trimmed grille and low-set headlights. The QX80 also has a towing capacity of 8,500 pounds, and there is a hidden integrated Class IV hitch and connections. The QX80 also has available all-mode all-wheel drive (rear-wheel drive is standard). For such a big vehicle, the QX80 handles surprisingly well, with a ride smoothed by a Hydraulic Body Motion Control system that keeps lean to a minimum. Interior: The QX80 comes in seven- and eight-passenger configurations. The eight-seater has a bench seat for the second row. Overall, the quiet cabin is elegant, with plenty of soft-touch surfaces, polished wood trim, and some of the most comfortable and plush seats we've driven in. Refreshing or Revolting: 2015 Infiniti QX80 - Motor Trend

It's hard to look past the QX80's front grille, which is now in your face more than it was on the outgoing car. While it keeps the same overall hourglass shape, its front grille now boasts a Q50-inspired mesh design that looks more upscale than the chrome vertical slats on the old grille. Moving down, the QX80 also gets the Q50's lower grille with sharper edges in addition to new LED running lights that sit in the lower front fascia. You won't find many differences in the 2015 QX80's side profile. With that said, the QX80 retains its upright stance and bulbous front end, while the chrome side vents stay in place. Keep looking down and you'll notice the SUV wears new 20-inch wheels with a double-spoke design, making it look flashier from the side compared to the vehicle it replaces. From behind, the QX80 wears a larger bumper protector, but other than that, everything appears to be the same, including its predecessor's LED taillights. While the QX80 was already luxurious inside, the Japanese automaker stepped it up for the new model year and added better-quality materials inside the cabin.
