Acceleration from the 297-horsepower, 3. 5-liter V-6 is strong, and the new seven-speed automatic can adapt well to driving style, puttering unobtrusively during gentle driving but pulling off quick, snappy shifts when accelerating hard. We've found this slightly smaller engine to be smoother and less raucous than the larger 3. 7-liter in the Infiniti G sport sedans, while almost as strong. In either base EX35 guise or as the more luxurious EX35 Journey, the EX comes with a choice of rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive—the latter detracting a slight bit from handling but adding some welcome all-weather ability to this wagon. From the perspective of styling, that's mostly a good thing—the EX35 remains one of the most handsome crossovers on the market, more like a curvy, somewhat taller sport wagon than an SUV. From the front, it resembles that of the Infiniti G sedans, while its tail looks like a more tucked-down version of the rear styling of the larger FX35 and FX50 performance crossovers. The Infiniti EX35 is not exactly small, since it measures about 15 feet long and weighs 3,764 pounds. The fact that Infiniti offers several tech features as standard offerings makes the deal even sweeter, even if we ended up liking the sportier Volvo C30 a bit more. Actually, the EX35 is not really in the same small category as the C30 either. It’s more of a crossover-hatchback hybrid that maybe falls in line better with something like the BMW X3 – and frankly looks very similar. Yet, inside, the EX35 drives like it is meant for careening down some lonely country lane and taking corners at fairly ludicrous speeds. Like the Infiniti M37x , the EX35 has that cocooning cockpit feel. There are faux maple wood accents and a leather steering wheel and shift knob, something that you may not notice right away but might appreciate compared to the hard plastic used on so many other cars. The lighting inside, especially the “electroluminescent” gauges, have that extra luxury look that makes the car worth the higher price tag (our test car is priced at $46,605 but the base price is $35,150 – or much closer to the X3. ). Those views let me ease the EX into a downtown parking spot on one try. Infiniti says its EX35 combines the look and feel of a luxury coupe with a crossover's flexibility. The EX is a luxury crossover built on the same platform as the G37 sedan and shares similar handling and performance characteristics. Power for all EX models comes from the tried-and-true 3. 5-liter V-6 that produces 297 horsepower and 253 lb. -ft. of torque. We found it notable for its adaptive shift control feature that matches gear selection to your driving style, and the rev-matching feature on downshifts. The all-wheel-drive system didn't affect gas mileage (the EPA range is 17 city to 24 highway for both rear-wheel-drive and AWD versions), but it cuts down ground clearance to 5. 7 inches.
