Cornering ability isn't something I expect from a seven-passenger SUV, but the MDX surprised me by holding itself flat in the turns and using its torque vectoring all-wheel-drive to dance around the apexes. That, however, was the 2010 Acura MDX , the second generation of Acura's largest SUV that complemented its Super Handling All-wheel drive with a magnetic adaptive suspension. The 2016 Acura MDX retains the all-wheel-drive system, but went to a fixed suspension in its third-generation revamp. Up front, corporate styling means a shield-shaped grille with a single, badge-embedded bar establishing a common identity among all new models in the Acura line-up, from the small ILX to the big MDX. And though the MDX comes with third-row seating, the visual impression is more five-passenger SUV. In fact, the MDX is only half an inch longer than the BMW X5. I found access to the third row seating reasonable, with plenty of space to step through between the second row and C-pillar. The back seats easily fold flat with the push of a button on either side of the cargo area. Seats folded, we easily piled in nine copier-paper-size boxes and many other wedding-related items. Even with all of that stuff in the Infiniti, I had no problems seeing out of the rear or side windows of the crossover. The sound system kept me entertained during the ride, and all of the necessary controls for that and the HVAC system were at hand and easy to use. It didn't go any lower than I had it. While I liked that the EX35 did drive like a car and not like a crossover, I didn't like the feeling of sitting on the car instead of inside it. The interior materials are quality, but the exterior lines... MANAGING EDITOR BOB GRITZINGER: Lots of commentary on this car--people were quite intrigued by its squashed greenhouse look and pearly white paint. With their plows and blowers, condo workers are more effective at snow removal than 50-somethings wielding snow shovels at detached, privately owned homes. Thus, we parked this week's test car, the 2010 Infiniti EX35 Journey crossover utility wagon, at Ria's condo in Northern Virginia. She was able to get out and drive while my wife, Mary Anne, and I shoveled snow after paying $60 to one itinerant worker and $150 to a group of ambulatory shovel carriers to do the job poorly. In the first February blast of snow and ice, I discovered that Mitsubishi's claim of superior stability and traction for its 2010 Outlander XLS crossover utility vehicle, equipped with its patented Super All-Wheel Control, was just that -- a claim. In strong crosswinds, ice and light snow, the Outlander wiggle-waggled its way along northbound Interstate 87. The Mitsubishi Outlander XLS came with 18-inch-diameter "all-weather" radials. The Infiniti EX 35 Journey was shod with 17-inch-diameter "all-weather" tires. But the EX35 Journey proved a much more stable companion on roads pounded by sleet and other icy precipitation.
