Owls Head auction draws car lovers from across the country - Bangor Daily News

OWLS HEAD, Maine — David Elliott of Dallas was vacationing in the midcoast area this week when he read about the annual automobile auction at the Owls Head Transportation Museum. On the final day of his vacation, Elliott decided to add to his large car collection by buying two antique vehicles. The 38th annual automobile auction attracted hundreds of bidders and vehicle enthusiasts. There were 201 vehicles up for sale at the event, with sales totaling $2,915,550 by the end of the auction. He was the successful bidder for the 1929 Ford for $21,000 and acquired the Studebaker with a winning bid of $7,500. The Dallas man said this was the first time had been to the auction. He was vacationing on McGee Island, a private 110-acre island 3 miles off Port Clyde, when he read about the auction in an auto magazine. He said many of his vehicles are at his Dallas ranch, while others are in a Dallas showroom or are on display in museums. His main reason for attending the auction, however, was a 1963 Austin Healey 3000 MK II convertible that was scheduled to be auctioned in the afternoon. Source: bangordailynews.com

ASSOCIATE EDITOR GRAHAM KOZAK: Previous experience with current BMW 3-series and 4-series cars tells me that the 428i xDrive gets more fun the more you try to do with it, but frozen roads and traffic jams meant this particular test run was pretty... And when you take out the fun of driving it quickly -- even the entry-level four-cylinder shines as a smooth, powerful little motor when you push it -- the little things start to bug you. You’ll be paying a lot of money for a car that still requires thousands of dollars in options to get heated front seats, a navigation system, satellite radio and a backup camera. This is increasingly feeling like paying for Wi-Fi in a hotel -- something that, incidentally, only high-end luxury hotels really feel like they can get away with these days. In exchange, you’re getting one of the more elegant profiles on the market wrapped around a great chassis, plus a smooth four-cylinder that plays very nicely with the eight-speed automatic. In this configuration, though, it still feels like an OK (if pricey) version of a really good car. How about going rear-wheel drive only. Of course, go down that path too far and you wind up in a different car entirely. I mean, if you’re buying a coupe, you’re probably not planning on using the rear seats for regular passenger duty. The 2015 Sorento was one of my favorite crossovers to drive recently, even though it was at the end of the current generation’s lifespan. It’s 3 inches longer overall now, with a 3. 1-inch longer wheelbase to help it ride more luxuriously. With its bigger dimensions, it now has more interior volume than the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Nissan Murano, making it feel almost like a full-size SUV on the inside. All that newfound capability comes from a revised version of its top-end engine, a 3. 3-liter V6 that makes 290 horsepower and 252 pound-feet of torque. 4-liter four-cylinder engine is still available as the base engine, and Kia also adds a third choice in this new model: a 2. 0-liter turbocharged four. After driving several versions of the Sorento, the turbocharged engine was my favorite for its quick response, smooth power delivery and decent gas mileage rating of 27 mpg on the highway. It makes 240 horsepower, enough to make this roomy crossover feel nimble on highway on-ramps. In fact, “nimble” is a surprisingly good way to describe the overall driving feel of the new Sorento.
