There’s no denying that it’s easy to be a jerk in this car. This BMW firmly reinforces stereotypes. More than a 3-series sedan. Germans don’t do anything without a plan, and you can imagine the fights in Munich as BMW considered splitting the coupes from the bread-buttering 3-series nameplate, which until recently represented half of BMW’s U. S. sales. What’s done is done, and while we await the even more jarring M4 badge , the 428i arrives with a base price of $41,425, or $3200 more than a base 328i. Included in the 4’s price premium, however, are xenon headlamps and a sunroof, plus a flared... The curb weights for the automatic-equipped coupe and sedan are roughly equal, at around 3500 pounds. Before you squawk, consider that BMW sees this, the 4-series, not as a sports car, but as a luxury coupe. As with all BMWs lately, the interior has its share of bare plastic, but it’s dressed up with hockey sticks of high-gloss black trim. Our 428i GC’s test sheet reads like a duplicate of the coupe’s. With identical gearing and wearing the same staggered 18-inch Bridgestone Potenza S001 run-flat summer tires, the GC ran the quarter-mile in 14. 2 seconds at 98 mph, just a tenth of a second and 1 mph behind the coupe. Once you’ve selected the sport driving mode to stiffen up the adaptive dampers included in the $1000 Dynamic Handling package on our test car, the GC displays the platform’s customary trait: a satisfyingly solid control of body motions undermined... The 3664-pound Gran Coupe weighs 135 pounds more than the coupe, enough to drop the EPA highway rating from 35 mpg to 34 for the GC. We saw 27 combined. BMW cites equivalent cargo capacities for the sedan and GC, yet we were able to stuff an additional fifth bag of mulch in the hatch. Certainly, you could do worse in choosing a BMW from the 3-/4-series line (e. g. , the cetacean Gran Turismo). BMW offers twice as many body styles now as it did in the 3-series range of a decade ago. But as we drive every new variant, we wonder what compromises were made to the original formula to allow it to work for the additional models, and how much time BMW was able to spend tuning each one. 2014 BMW 428i Coupe review notes - AutoWeek

ASSOCIATE EDITOR JAKE LINGEMAN: Ignoring the idiocy in BMW s naming conventions, the 4-series is a darn fine vehicle. The 4-series looks lower and wider than the outgoing 3-series coupe. The wheel package looks perfect on this, which is why I would probably have to spring for the $3,500 M Sport package. I'd also add the Dynamic Handling package, and M Sport brakes, so I'd probably like this car as is, except with a manual transmission. I switched into sport+ mode, which gave a little leeway on the traction control, and was able to kick the tail out on cue. normally BMWs are solid in that respect. I didn't do a lot of switching modes, so I can only say that it felt properly weighted and direct in “Sport” mode. The interior is standard BMW fare, but our test car was light on options. EDITOR WES RAYNAL: Why anyone would buy a 4-series over a 3-series is sort of beyond me. The 3 is more useable and sensible, and according to the BMW site is almost $4K cheaper base car to base car. I guess it comes down to styling in a coupe instead of being sedan practical, and this is a damn good-looking car. Source: autoweek.com
