2014 Audi S5 vs. 2014 BMW 435i - Car and Driver

Conspiracy theorists will tell you that BMW’s payroll got a little lighter when the current-generation 3-series appeared. Even so, the collective merit of the full 3- and 4-series family landed it on our 10Best list. A 3-series in structure, but with additional chassis gusseting and tweaks to the suspension geometry, the 4-series contributes a substantial share of the model line’s desirability. We figured the 4 would be indomitable in any comparo, but because we wanted to put its best foot forward, we lined up the baddest example available—a 435i with the $3100 M Sport package, which includes firmer dampers, springs, and anti-roll bars. The $1000 Dynamic Handling pack adds variable-ratio steering and adjustable dampers. With a 300-hp inline-six, the 435i starts at $46,925, but ours totaled $57,225 after $1900 in lighting upgrades, the $2200 Premium pack (satellite radio and keyless entry and start), and a few other nickels and dimes. Its V-6 displaces just one cubic inch more than the 435i’s straight-six but makes 33 more horses and 25 more pound-feet, for totals of 333 and 325. Six Therapy . A 435i with a six-speed manual was barely quicker than the 428i automatic. In testing, our six-speed manual 435i managed a 5. 2-second run to 60 with the quarter falling in 13. 7 seconds at 105 mph. Although we haven’t tested an automatic 435i, we fully expect it will match the 335i automatic’s time of 4. 6 seconds to 60. But life isn’t just about performance numbers, which is why we’d go for the slower 435i with the rewarding and involving... 0-liter turbo four is arguably the best four-cylinder engine available today. 0-liter turbo six is one of the best engines available in any sub-$100,000 car—period. We’d actually like to hear a little more noise from it, and there’s a brief whiff of lag that you’ll notice if you’ve just driven a naturally aspirated or supercharged car. Spending the extra dough for a 435i manual, when you could have an almost-as-quick 428i automatic, doesn’t make sense until you actually sit in a 435i and work the engine. We’ve written a lot about the light and relatively numb electric power steering in the 3-series, and the system in the 4-series is better but isn’t drastically different. I keep looking at the BMW and Audi reviews you all have done. In May I will be graduating from college, and have also been to trade in my current 2006 Land Rover LR3 for something sportier and honestly more fun to drive. I have carefully looked at my budget and decided I can afford to spend no more than 60K. At this point I have narrowed my top choices to a 2015 Audi S4 or a 2015 BMW 435i Coupe or Gran Coupe. I want a luxury sedan thats fun to drive everyday and on the track. He favors the BMW while I like the Audi S4. His point is that the BMW 435i is all-new with great lines and a very sporty character. however, I feel the Audi S4 is one of the best driving vehicles its class and it should be slightly more affordable. Roman also states that the Audi S4 is an old design – which is true too. By the way, we have yet to drive it, but the Mercedes-Benz CLA45 AMG starts at $48,500.
