Isuzu’s D-Max is as tough as nails and as reliable as sunrise, and the market knows it. Vehicle style: 4X4 Dual-cab Utility. Power: 130kW@3600rpm | Torque: 380Nm@1800rpm-2800rpm (auto). If there is a buckety-looking tub-thing on the back, it’s a ute - that’s what it has always been, and what it should stay. And just because our septic mates think it’s a pick-up, doesn’t mean we should adopt it. So poncy marketers, advertising tools, faddists, fashionistas, rappers and other wannabe-dudes take note: a car that looks like this one – Isuzu’s tough as... Which brings us to Isuzu’s D-Max Ute. For starters, Isuzu knows what it is. ‘UTE’ is in its company name here, Isuzu UTE. And they don’t build ‘em much tougher, reliable, or ‘utey’ than Isuzu. Its D-Max Ute does the heavy lifting for this quiet-achieving small company with the hard-grafting commercial vehicle heart. It’s becoming increasingly difficult to pick the right 4×4 ute for the right job these days, with carmakers getting more and more competitive with their packages. The 2015 Holden Colorado and 2015 Isuzu D-Max are two of the underdogs in the segment. Nonetheless, comparing the space cab and the double cab is actually quite interesting. The Isuzu is powered by a 3. 0-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder producing 130kW of power at 3600rpm, and 380Nm of torque available between 1800rpm and 2800rpm. This engine powered the previous Holden Colorado before a new 2. 8-litre turbo-diesel was introduced. The new unit produces 147kW of power at 3600rpm, and a much meatier but thinner spread 500Nm available at 2000rpm (440Nm for manual). From the engine, the Isuzu gets an AISIN five-speed auto while the Holden gets a newer six-speed auto. Both are equipped with part-time four-wheel drive and share a similar drive mode select system with low range, while the Holden gets a limited-slip differential at the rear. In terms of economy, the Holden, weighing in at 2016kg (tare), boasts an ADR-tested 8. 9L/100km average, while the lighter weight Isuzu (1940kg) consumes 8. 1L/100km. Source: performancedrive.com.au

The recent launch of Isuzu Ute's I-Venture Club in Queensland also gave motoring. au a chance to take a closer look at the company's latest pick-up model, a fully equipped Isuzu D-MAX X-Runner (pronounced 'Ex-Runner'). Well, for a start, this year's limited-edition model is based on the top-spec LS-Terrain version of the D-MAX 4x4 dual-cab pick-up (last year's X-Runner took its cue from the mid-spec LS-U). That's a big drop from the 600 limited-edition X-Runners released in 2014, and Isuzu Ute says the majority of available stock has already rolled off showroom floors.
