Fun fact: While Japanese brands produce spare parts for decades, even after ceasing production of a model, GM stops after 7 years. (1) Japanese brands break down and need replacement parts at a much lower rate and (2) the 7 year cut off is probably another way for GM to save a penny so it can be mismanaged elsewhere. A mechanic once told me that GM fuel pumps put his kids through college and he could count the number of times he replaced fuel pumps on other makes on one hand. GM doesn’t stop producing all parts after 7 yrs. Our parts department can get parts for 1990’s vehicles yet (my brother in law is rebuilding a 1987 Silverado Short Box 4×4 and many of the parts I pick up right in our parts department). It is the more common parts that are now produced by many aftermarket companies (jobbers) who make them cheaper and sell them cheaper that GM chooses not to keep in production. There are so many jobber/aftermarket suppliers of GM, Ford and Chrysler/Mopar parts that the big three choose not to compete with those parts. Plus, many of the aftermarket companies also have contracts with GM, Ford and Chrysler to supply parts for new vehicles coming off the line, so it makes no sense for GM to compete with them on parts for older vehicles and put their own suppliers... GM Denies Another Ignition Switch Claim Extension - GM Authority (blog)

Yesterday, General Motors denied the request of two US Senators asking the automaker to extend the deadline yet again for claimants to file for monetary compensation relating to the defective GM ignition switch. ) wrote GM CEO Mary Barra, citing a pending Department of Justice Criminal Investigation and ongoing federal court inquisitions into the automaker’s liability in the wake of the bankruptcy as factors which may cause claimants to delay. “Indeed, they cannot have sufficient information until the DOJ concludes its criminal investigation and the bankruptcy court decides whether to lift the liability shield that G. M. now unjustifiably hides behind. While General Motors was only legally obligated to hold the door open for relief fund claimants for 90 days, the automaker has had at least some sort of legal shielding from fallout due to the terms of their bankruptcy and government bailout. But Senators Blumenthal and Markey feel that this “legal shield” was unjustly granted, seeing as the automaker knew “for at least a decade about the ignition switch defect,” yet failed to disclose it. The GM Foundation donates $3 million to US schools annually through the University/Organization Partner Program in order to strengthen and support higher education curricula in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). “Year after year, the GM Foundation has supported our students in hands-on projects and collaborative work,” said MIT president Glenn Mroz. Student work on projects like these are the reasons why our student’s resumes move to the top of the pile and why their starting salaries are among the highest in the nation for public universities.
