For a company that doesn’t market its own cars, there aren’t many bigger names in the auto industry than Pininfarina, the Italian design house that’s penned more iconic cars than any other automaker on the planet. Over its 85 year history, the company has styled cars for Rolls-Royce, Cadillac, Honda, Fiat, Peugeot, and Ford, among others, but it’s best known for its close ties to Ferrari. The Testarossa, California Spyder, Daytona, F40, and Dino all wear Pininfarina’s fender badge, and for those of you who aren’t familiar with the company’s automotive oeuvre, its industrial design wing styled that fancy computerized Coke machine... Ghia was snapped up by Ford in the 1970s. ItalDesign, the company that designed the Volkswagen Mk. I Golf, BMW M1, and DeLorean DMC-12 was bought by Lamborghini in 2010, and was completely absorbed by the company last month. Bertone, the house behind the Lamborghini Muira , and the Fiat X1/9 went bust and shut its doors in 2014. And while none of these companies enjoyed Pininfarina’s high visibility in their waning years, the company’s recent financial woes show just... All over the world, companies from Ford to Rolls-Royce offered rolling chassis models that were shipped off to have their bodies designed and built to customer specifications by these shops. Here’s a bit of auto trivia for you: what does the term “Allante” mean in Italian. The word was created randomly by a GM computer as a way of concealing any details about the Cadillac by the same name. However to many of those who worked feverishly to bring the luxury car to these shores, the word might as well have meant, “pain in the a**. ” That’s a good metaphor to sum up the trouble and expense the project entailed. The suits at Cadillac want a vehicle that can hold its own with Europe’s finest. He agrees to help build the new car, which will fit on a chopped-off El Dorado frame. PHOTOS: See More of the 1987 Cadillac Allante. First challenge is getting the frames to Italy. The crew in Italy welded the chassis components into one piece, installed their own bodies and interiors, and topped everything off with a paint job. But, when they told the news to the suits at Cadillac, the Americans said, “no way. ” So the semi-finished vehicles were returned to Detroit, where Cadillac installed the sub-frames, drive train, fuel tanks, and wheels. 18-wheelers with special covers shipped the new vehicles to dealers across the country. Car Collector Corner: Buick Reatta, Pontiac Fiero, Cadillac Allante - Towanda Daily Review

Q: Greg, I live in the Wayne County area of New York and am wondering if the cars like the Buick Reatta, Cadillac Allante and Pontiac Fiero will ever become true collector gems. What cars from the 1980s and on do you feel have a chance to become collector favorites that aren't already are, like a Buick Grand National. At some point, the Reatta, Fiero and Cadillac will either go up in price or not, but right now, these cars are available for what very reasonable prices. A friend of mine just bought a nice, above average condition '86 Fiero GT V6 for a great price, about $2,000 below the book value. My personal opinion is that these cars will one day be favorites for those collectors who love the nameplate, although they may never command top prices. Still, a nice Reatta, Allante or Fiero is a good find, and only time will tell of the cars true collector value. Current average NADA retail prices on the cars you mention are: '89 Reatta V6 GT Gran Sport with air, $5737. '86 Fiero base model 4-cylinder, $3,185. '88 Allante Convertible $5,925. Remember these are average condition prices, so there are some... As for modern cars that will become collector favorites, I would opine that any of the muscle cars currently available will one day garner collector interest. Source: thedailyreview.com
