Darin lag ein Problem, denn der Wagen fuhr an den automobilen Bedürfnissen im Nachkriegsdeutschland vorbei. Zusammen mit dem 2+2-Sitzer 503, stand der hübsche Roadster für eine verfehlte Modellpolitik, die der Marke fast den Ruin brachte. Auch in den USA, dem avisierten Kernmarkt, floppte der 507, obwohl ihm ein V8 innewohnte. Das BMW-Museum hatte den Patina-Hype in der Oldtimerszene allzu wörtlich genommen und das Importgut, einen hinreichend ausgeweideten 507 ohne Motor, für einige Zeit sogar zum Ausstellungsstück erhoben, bevor man es als Restaurierungsobjekt an die... Denn: Der Roadster hatte einen prominenten Vorbesitzer, der ihm viel Museales mit auf den Weg gab: Elvis Presley. In diesem Jahr feiert der Münchner Hersteller den 60. Geburtstag des Zweisitzers BMW 507, der vielen Oldtimerfans als einer der schönsten je gebauten Roadster gilt. Allerdings, und das irritiert angesichts der in die Millionen gehenden Preise, die der Flitzer heute erzielt: Er blickt auf eine alles andere als mustergültige Geschichte zurück, die der Marke fast den Ruin brachte. Er hört auf das Kürzel R129, und wer sich in der... Es mag ja sein, dass es sich beim R231 um den technisch besten Mercedes-Roadster handelt, mit dem man so schnell und sicher fahren kann wie in keinem offenen Zweisitzer des Herstellers zuvor. Aber er wäre mir zu teuer und zu langweilig und lustlos. Klare Linien vom Altmeister Wohl aus gutem Grund verkauft er sich so miserabel, dass man schon Gerüchte hört, er solle einem offenen AMG GT geopfert werden und nach dem für den Winter versprochenen Facelift nicht mehr neu aufgelegt werden. Auf der anderen Seite dürfte man die Legende SL nicht so sang- und klanglos vor die Hunde gehen lassen. Meine Tochter ist 23, schimpft ihn ein Altherrenauto und trifft mich damit härter, als wenn sie beim Frühstück wieder ein paar graue Haare entdeckt oder mir beim Joggen davonrennt. Ich kann es kaum erwarten, dass es endlich losgeht. Und andererseits noch so billig zu haben, dass man dafür kein tiefes Loch in die Haushaltskasse reißen oder unterwegs eine alarmgesicherte.
