IN a time of constant connectivity, low emission regulations and higher expectations from drivers, car companies are pushing the boundaries of vehicle concepts that are no longer just shiny static toys to look at. Some makers are taking leaps and... Today we're taking a closer look at five of those brands and in true D'Marge style, they're also ones we think would be pretty damn exciting to drive. One of their latest innovations is a race with BMW to create 'Laser Beam Headlights' — a fancy name for smart headlights which basically have a brain of their own. The technology is currently being tested on Audi race cars in the Le Mans 24-Hour endurance race. One of the most unlikely partnerships you're bound to witness in motoring history is that of the German-Japanese marriage of BMW and Toyota. The result will be Toyota's resurrected cult hero known as the Supra and a new Z4 from BMW. Early reports suggest that both sportscars will share the same engines and plug-in hybrid technology, with Toyota handling all the electronics and body construction while BMW develops engines and manufactures the Toyota-designed electric motors. This engine was also used in the last-generation BMW M3 and is still a joy on twisty roads. According to BMW, it will sprint from 0-60 mph in 4. 9 seconds and the top speed is 155 mph. Not every car needs a V-8 to be fun, especially on public roads. The inline-six also offers a type of smoothness that makes the Z4 M fun when you aren't flogging it. Unlike Mr. Floraday , I was blessed with perfect weather during my short time with the M Roadster. Needless to say, I didn't do any top up driving in the M but my top down experience was top-notch. Even though this car is engineered to be driven at nine tenths, it is just as competent at two tenths. If the Porsche Boxster didn't exist, I'd like the M Roadster a lot more. The BMW has a raw, muscle car feel to it. Fun, but I'm not sure I'd want to live with it every day. It was nice to once again drive the now old but powerful 3. 2-liter inline-six. I enjoyed my time with our bright-red BMW M Roadster over the weekend, when I had plenty of top-down time in warm but not sweltering temperatures. But the weekend did little to dispel the conclusions I made about the M Roadster back in February 2006 , when I conducted a comparison test between the then-new M Roadster and the Porsche Boxster S for our May 2006 cover story. Zweisitzer gegen Viersitzer, Sauger gegen Turbo, 2006er- gegen 2012er-Baujahr – beide Sportler trennen nicht nur viele Zahlen und Fakten, sondern auch knapp 20. 000 Euro. 500 Euro soll das BMW Z4 M Coupé im Gebrauchtwagencheck kosten, 44. 900 Euro das BMW 1er M Coupé. Dafür eint sie der magische Buchstabe M – und die in Reihe angeordneten sechs Zylinder mit 343 und 340 PS. Nach dem Produktionsstopp für den Z4 M im September 2008 (Kürzel E85/E86), mussten M-Fans bis zum Mai 2011 warten. Das BMW 1er M Coupé (Kürzel E82) kam im Mai 2011 und ging schon wieder im September 2012. Der Nachfolger M2 lässt noch etwas auf sich warten. Kein Grund für Trauerflor, denn passionierte M-Liebhaber müssen nur ins Netz gehen: Auf deutschen Online-Portalen stehen knapp 60 Exemplare des BMW 1er M Coupés zum Verkauf – doppelt so viele wie vom länger gebauten BMW Z4 M Coupé.
