Vor gerade einmal sechs Jahren hatte BMW den klassischen Hybrid noch lieb. Auch die "zukunftsweisende Effizienz" werde die Konkurrenz alt aussehen lassen. Daimler lobte den Zwitterantrieb ebenfalls: Einen "CO2-Champion" mit "souveränem Leistungspotenzial" habe man nun im Programm, tönten die Stuttgarter im Mai 2009 bei der Vorstellung des S400 Hybrid. Geradezu fluchtartig kehren Audi, BMW und andere der Technologie den Rücken, mit der ihnen die Japaner noch vor wenigen Jahren Angst eingejagt haben. "Das Thema Vollhybrid spielt bei deutschen Herstellern fast keine Rolle mehr", sagt Autoexperte Thomas Schlick, Partner bei der Unternehmensberatung Roland Berger. Hohe Kosten für eine Hochvoltbatterie, dazu die doppelte Motorisierung - und im Gegenzug nur wenig Ersparnis beim CO2-Ausstoß: Diese Kombination bedeutet für den lange als Zukunftshoffnung gepriesenen Antrieb zumindest vorläufig das Aus. "Die deutschen Autobauer sind aus der Vollhybrid-Technik so gut wie ausgestiegen", beobachtet auch Autoexperte Ferdinand Dudenhöffer von der Universität Duisburg-Essen. Anders als Toyota hätten BMW, Audi und Co. nie eine wirkliche Kompetenz für dieses Thema aufgebaut. Und so schrauben Fachleute die Verkaufsprognosen für die Zwitterautos nach unten. As an all-terrain sport-utility “coupe” that looks like a gerbil head and offers up to 555 horsepower, BMW’s X6 seems like an exercise in absurdity. To elevate it to an elite stratum of insanity, however, BMW conjured up the X6 ActiveHybrid. Here, the mid-level X6’s 400-hp, twin-turbo V-8 is mated to a transmission shared with the Chevrolet Tahoe hybrid. This tranny stirs in conventional automatic and CVT functionalities with two electric motors, for a total system output of 480 horsepower and 575 pound-feet of torque. The X6’s remarkable responsiveness is barely dulled, and the hybrid still posted 0. 86 g on the skidpad. But hybridization affects the X6 in other ways. Still, the hybrid’s 163-foot stop from 70 mph is heroic for something this massive. 3 seconds to 60, the hybrid is slower off the line than the standard V-8 model, but it catches up before 100 mph. De vaandeldragers daarvan zijn natuurlijk de specifiek ontworpen i3 en i8, maar de grootste verdienste zit 'm stilletjes in de hybrides op basis van de reguliere modellen. Ook met de nu gepresenteerde 225xe en 330e denkt BMW hoge ogen te gooien. Laten we beginnen met de 225xe. Dat is een plug-inhybridevariant met vierwielaandrijving van de BMW 2-serie Active Tourer, een cocktail zoals de MPV-klasse die nog nooit eerder heeft gedronken. met een theoretisch gemiddelde van 2,1 l/100 km is de 225xe allesbehalve een stevige drinker. Zijn de accu's leeg dan is verder rijden op de benzinetank mogelijk. De knappe cijfers heeft de 225xe te danken aan een efficiënte wisselwerking tussen de bekende 1. 5 liter driecilinderturbo met 136 pk – die de voorwielen aandrijft – en een 68 pk sterke elektromotor die de achterwielen laat ronddraaien.
