In a recent speech, Honda CEO Takahiro Hachigo said, “As the next generation of mobility products, Honda will evolve products that use electricity as a core technology. ” When interpreting his remarks, keep in mind that to Honda, a fuel cell vehicle is an electric car that gets its electricity from hydrogen instead of a battery. Hachigo also said the new Honda FCEV sedan would start production during the fiscal year that ends March 31, 2016. The company plans to take advantage of “mutually complementary inter-regional relationships,” according to Hachigo. That means some North American Fit and European Jazz models will come from Japan, the next generation of Civic 5-door which will be supplied from Europe to other regions and the next generation of CR-V which will be supplied from Canada to Europe. Tightening global emissions standards have many high-end carmakers looking for ways to improve the fuel efficiency of luxury models, supercars, and other products one normally wouldn’t consider very green. The Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) brand will focus on hybrids and possibly hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles, but not electric cars, CEO Harald Wester said in a recent interview with Motor Trend. Wester said Maserati will first work to improve the efficiency of standalone internal-combustion engines, and then move on to hybrids, and in the “distant future,” fuel cells. The Maserati CEO believes that fuel-cell powertrains can be packaged to be smaller and lighter than battery-electric ones, or at least that this will be the case by the time Maserati begins considering putting one into production. In the shorter term, Wester said Maserati could maintain its reputation for performance with a sporty hybrid, noting that cars like the Ferrari LaFerrari can be pretty engaging. Fellow performance-luxury brand Porsche is already moving in this direction with its Panamera S E-Hybrid and Cayenne S E-Hybrid models. Tesla has hired Ganesh Srivats, formerly a senior vice president at Burberry, to head its North American sales effort. Srivats is expected to help Tesla market itself as a premium lifestyle company much the same way Porsche and Ferrari have done. “This makes all the sense in the world,” said Scott Galloway, a professor of marketing at New York University’s Stern School of Business, in a phone interview with Bloomberg. “Tesla is not an automobile company, it’s a luxury company. Under Srivats’ guidance, it moved from being a conservative high-end fashion house to haute couture, said Ken Harris, managing partner at Cadent Consulting Group in Chicago, which advises consumer and retail companies. “If Tesla is thinking that they are selling a lifestyle and a way of thinking, then someone from Burberry could be the right choice,” Harris said in a phone interview. Tesla is following the lead of Apple, which hired former Burberry Group CEO Angela Ahrendts as head of its retail operations in 2013.
