By now, BMW expected the world to have taken a few crucial first steps toward electrification, but things aren’t progressing as quickly as the automaker had hoped, the report suggests. And seeing as BMW expects to sell 100,000 i3 units per year at 335i sedan prices (in the ballpark of $45,000), that’s not good news. In response to the world’s slow progress, BMW has shelved its proposed i1 intra-city car and i5 van. If the new models fail to successfully launch, it may spell bad news for sports car fans too, as the long overdue M1 supercar will likely have to wait until the i8 coupe can find its footing in the market. BMW 5-Series Diesel Pricing Revealed, Undercuts ActiveHybrid 5 - Green Car Reports

If going green was all about financial payoff, BMW is the latest company whose products suggest that diesel is better than hybrid for the shrewd consumer. The German firm has revealed pricing for the 2014 5-Series range, and lurking within the price list are both the 2014 ActiveHybrid 5, and the 2014 535d sedan. Of these, the diesel is considerably cheaper--its $57,525 sticker price a full $4,800 less than the $62,325 ActiveHybrid 5. Splitting the two is the all-wheel drive 535d xDrive, at $59,825--so customers looking for better all-weather ability also... There's no official word on fuel economy yet, but it wouldn't have to work hard to beat the ActiveHybrid 5's underwhelming 26 mpg combined, and its 23 mpg city and 30 mpg highway ratings. As usual, that's where hybrids come into their own, and it'll also make the hybrid a quieter companion at lower speeds. The diesel also isn't quite as powerful as the hybrid's 335 combined system horsepower, and the 3. 0-liter gasoline engine of the ActiveHybrid will always offer that little extra aural appeal over the diesel unit. BMW ActiveHybrid 5 - AutoExpress

In isolation, the ActiveHybrid 5 is fast and smooth to drive, with impressive CO2 and economy figures. Outside of BMW’s own diesels, rivals such as the Mercedes E300 BlueTEC – which combines hybrid tech with diesel technology – may prove a better proposition. BMW has taken the 535i’s 302bhp 3. 0-litre turbocharged six-cylinder engine and ZF eight-speed automatic transmission and combined them with a 54bhp electric motor and lithium-ion battery pack. The ActiveHybrid 5 has two drive modes: pure electric and a parallel ‘boost’ mode in which the petrol and electric motors are both in use. In normal mode, the ActiveHybrid 5 isn’t quite as rapid as there’s no extra battery power – we would estimate the 0-62mph time to be around 7. 5 seconds. To maximise economy, the ActiveHybrid 5 debuts BMW’s Intelligent Energy Management software as part of the optional Navigation Professional system. The ActiveHybrid 5 comes with 17-inch low-resistance tyres as standard, but our test car featured optional 18-inch Streamline alloy wheels. In a 535d diesel we would expect to be getting nearer 40mpg in regular driving. The lithium-ion battery pack is positioned over the rear axle, adding 140kg to the weight of the 5 Series.
