It has an intelligent all-wheel drive (i. e. , it reads and responds to the road in real time) on an eight-speed automatic transmission that’ll pull to 60 miles per hour in 3. 6 seconds. (The M6, by the way, has only rear-wheel drive and a seven-speed, dual-clutch automatic or a six-speed manual. Horsepower swapped for torque, and BMW’s still-funky dual-clutch transmission traded for a tight eight-speed slushbox. You’d wind up with something like the BMW Alpina B6. The combination of reduced power and extra weight brings the big four-door to 60 mph in 3. 7 seconds, two tenths slower than the last M6 Gran Coupe we tested. Horsepower and the M6’s 373-pound weight advantage also put it through the quarter-mile four tenths sooner, or 11. 7 seconds to the 12. 1 of the Alpina. Is the extra 25K for more power and luxury worth it. Yes, yes it is. ROAD TEST EDITOR JAKE LINGEMAN: This whole Alpina setup is gorgeous. The hunter green metallic paint sets off the 15-spoke Alpina wheels, and the GC version looks long and low sitting in a driveway. Inside, Alpina pushed an already good interior into the stratosphere, as long as you like semi-loud colors. I can’t say for sure if it’s cherry wood, but it’s the color of cherry wood. this Alpina has green and blue, which might even look a little cooler. So I took it through a car wash, threw it in neutral as you’re supposed to, and the thing sounded like mission control before a launch with all of the buzzers and beeps going off. Thankfully it didn’t hit the automatic brakes, as there were several cars behind me. I appreciated that BMW put all of the safety sensor stuff in one place to the left of the steering wheel. A tap-tap-tap seemed to disengage all of the active safety stuff, just not the beeps. So this Gran Coupe has the Driving Dynamics Control and Adaptive Drive with Alpina software and active roll stabilization.
