Mazda once tried their hand at the sport, and the culmination of their rallying efforts is the subject of this week's Bizarre Car of the Week. Meet the 1988 Mazda 323 GTX, a turbocharged, all-wheel-drive compact hatchback from Japan's most smile-inducing automotive brand. The unrestricted (but incredibly dangerous) "Group B" era spawned some of the fastest and most extreme rally cars the world has ever seen, including the famous Audi Sport Quattro. "Group A" rally racing followed, when too many deaths forced Group B to be canceled in 1987. Group A featured more strict safety regulations, including the introduction of stronger homologation rules, meaning that automakers had to sell a certain... Mazda saw this as a great opportunity for success, and took their strong-selling Familia hatchback to the dirt backroads of the world. The 323 GTX was a turbocharged, all-wheel-drive, rally-car-for-the-road long before the WRX was a twinkle in Subaru's eye. Mazda only brought 1,243 GTXs stateside between 1988 and 1989, and the GTX never finished first in overall points, climbing as high as third in 1989. A quarter of a century after the first MX-5 appeared Mazda has launched hits latest iteration in New Zealand. It is 25 years since we were introduced to the original which combined all that was great about British sports cars with none of the things that were awful, like leaky hoods, lack of reliability and lousy build quality. * Brand new Mazda MX-5 hasn't changed a bit. * The Mazda "rock star" who loves the little MX-5 roadster. * New Mazda MX-5 stays in front. The MX-5 also combined the scale of an MGB with a design nod to the Lotus Elan and became the biggest selling sports car of all time. MG did try to make a late go of the roadster with the awful mess that was the MGR V8 which may have sounded nice, thanks to a discarded ex GM alloy V8 and had a nice wooden dash. Iffy plastic add-ons made it look muscular, but just as many say the best MX-5 was the very first without power steer, we say the best of the MGBs was the 1962 model, with wire wheels. MGF and TF.
