Dealer sued over trailer hitch for wheelchair responds to lawsuit - Milwaukee Journal Sentinel (blog)

A Delavan car dealer says the couple suing his business over a car that can't tow a small trailer for the wife's electric wheelchair led his staff to believe an add-on hitch was for a light duty rack or platform. It contends staff at Kunes Country Chevrolet Cadillac repeatedly assured Stephen and Melody Michael the 2012 Mazda 5 station wagon could tow a small trailer, but they later found out the car's owner's manual specifically warns against any towing. In an email to the Journal Sentinel after the story was published, Gregg Kunes said the general manager was out of the office the day a reporter sent e-mail and voice mail seeking comment. Kunes said the Michaels, of Elkhorn, said they needed a hitch to hold an approximately 200 pound wheelchair, which Kunes said his staff interpreted to mean the hitch was for a light-duty platform or rack. The hitch installed by the dealership was rated to carry more than the 200 pounds, and was made specifically for a 2012 Mazda 5, Kunes said. Kunes said the dealership heard nothing from the Michaels until July, two months after they took delivery of the Mazda.
