Jaguar's riposte to the E39-generation BMW M5 was to fit an Eaton supercharger to the rather underrated S-Type . The result was a four-door executive saloon that just happened to serve up 400bhp and the ability to blast your way to 155mph in... While it's the Munich-crafted super-caloon that's more in demand 13 years later, the S-Type R offers similar performance for a smaller outlay, making it a family-friendly saloon with sure-fire future classic credentials. All are fitted with the blown, 4. 2-litre version of Jaguar 's AJV8 engine and a six-speed ZF autobox, with the only major update coming in 2004 when some of its busier lines were tidied up as part of a facelift for the entire S-Type range. Today, the R represents one of the best value routes into performance Jaguar ownership, with prices hitting the bottom of their depreciation curve. It's also the rarest, best-equipped and fastest of the modern S-Types, so now is definitely the time to buy one. Transmission RWD, six-speed auto. A common S-Type R niggle is the water pipe beneath the supercharger failing. The component itself only costs about £20, but relacing it involves lifting out the supercharger to gain access, so labour costs quickly stack up. Check carefully to see if there are tell-tale antifreeze stains around the pipe, and haggle... The rear suspension arm bushes are prone to wearing out - particularly if the car's been used hard throughout its life - so check them carefully for signs of perishing or flexing. Predictably, the M5 fought off Jaguar’s upstart and we eventually proclaimed the BMW the “paragon of four-door performance motoring”. It was a close-run thing, though, with the Jaguar proving surprisingly capable. These days, a decent E39 M5 will set you back £6000, and the potential for quite costly repairs or maintenance is quite high. A clean S-type R, meanwhile, will be only £4000. “You’re basically getting a supercar for no money, really,” says Gary Robinson, owner of independent specialist Swallows Jaguar ( swallowsjaguar. New, the Jaguar’s supercharged 4. 2-litre V8 would have produced 395bhp and 399lb ft, allowing the 1800kg saloon to sprint to 60mph in 5. 5sec. “One common flaw, though, is a water pipe underneath the supercharger failing. The pipe itself costs only £20, but it’s a lot of labour — the supercharger needs to be lifted — and costs can spiral because other minor parts might need to be replaced. The Jaguar Mk1 and Mk2 and in-demand cars. Innovative, beautiful, well-appointed and dignified, they're quite rightly a hot ticket for so many classic car fans. It became a very, very popular car – up to the point that at one time Jaguar was selling four saloon models of similar size. It's very easy to see why – it had the four-wheel disc brakes carried over from the Mk2 and the independent rear suspension that had featured in the MkX, which combined to create a car that not only gave it better handling than a steed of its size... The interior was thoroughly worked over on the inside to improve ergonomics and walnut veneer greets your eyes most agreeably when you cast your eyes over the cabin. It's simply a lovely place to be. But don't think this was just a wafter – a 3. 4-litre model like the car shown here could get to 60mph in less than ten seconds and on to just under 120mph. Though quite why you'd want to do anything so vulgar as sprint to 60mph in something as graceful as this, we're not sure. And while Goodwood reverberates to the Festival of Speed this weekend, we can't think of better ways to saunter down to the Revival later this year than behind the wheel of this thoroughly decent type.
