Pickups are big, small pickups are not — at least in the U. S. Our neighbours to the south lost interest in compact pickups a few years ago. For a period, the domestic manufacturers produced both full-size and smaller of compact pickups — the latter in response to competition from Mazda, Nissan and Toyota. But high import duties on imported trucks combined with declining interest in smaller trucks in general, led to their demise. Ford held out the longest with the Ranger, but it too fell prey to falling interest in America. While these twins beneath the skin are indeed smaller than the full-size Silverado and Sierra, there is nothing compact about these trucks. This week’s test vehicle, the GMC Canyon was 50 cm longer than the last Ford Ranger. Granted, it was the maximum-length, extended wheelbase version, but even the regular Canyon is 21 cm longer than the last of the ‘compact’ pickups. The Canyon is available in a variety of configurations, including two- and four-wheel drive, short and long wheelbase, short and long cargo beds, four- and six-cylinder engines and regular or crew cab bodies. Is This Inflatable Bedliner/Camper Shell Revolutionary Or Idiotic? - Jalopnik

I was driving around recently and noticed a fair number of households with trucks that had makeshift camper shell-storage solutions, which usually involved some wood posts or a stack of cinder blocks. Essentially, There would be six basic parts: two inflatable sidewall units (think rubber/canvas raft-type construction), two hard side panels (fiberglass. ) hinged along the upper part of the truck bed walls, and a large panel for the floor of the truck bed that would become a roof. Rounding it out would be a compressor to inflate it all, and an optional inflatable mattress for the truck bed. When not in use, the inflatable parts would be packed tight between the bedliner panels and the sides of the truck bed. When inflated, the inflatable sidewalls would push the hard side bedliner panels up and out, where hinges would lock them in their vertical position. The floor bedliner panel would be lifted and locked into place as a roof panel. Source: jalopnik.com

[Side note: For the past decade, the paper’s delivery folks had driven up our shared driveway to leave two copies, but apparently the tough conditions this winter have resulted in drive-by drop-offs by those much-appreciated folks who toil from... Plus, I’d already taken some shots of the Canyon hanging out with the “Big Guys” at a local trucking company. GM calls the Canyon and its Chevrolet sibling, the Colorado, midsize trucks. Certainly, they’re a bit shorter than their full-size Sierra and Silverado counterparts—roughly 18 inches shorter overall with a 15-inch shorter wheelbase—but they’re still good-size vehicles. Our test Canyon had the longer (6-feet-2-inches vs. 5-feet-2-inches) of two available beds behind its extended cab. The longer bed enables a contractor or homeowner to carry standard 4x8-foot sheets of drywall or plywood within the vehicle’s confines with the tailgate down.
