Wehr named Mississippi River Commission president - Vicksburg Post

Michael C. Wehr, commander of the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Mississippi Valley Division, has been appointed president of the Mississippi River Commission by President Barack Obama. Kaiser, commander of the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers Great Lakes and Ohio River Division, headquartered in Cincinnati. “I look forward to continuing the long and proud legacy of service to our nation and its water resources that my predecessors have created. “Looking forward, the MVD mission is nested in America’s opportunity for future growth as we continue to invest in our nation’s infrastructure,” he said. The Mississippi River Commission is an advisory body created by an act of Congress June 28, 1879, to plan and provide for the general improvement of the entire length of the Mississippi River. The commission includes three officers from the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers, a representative from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and three civilians, two of whom must be civil engineers. “I sense a true optimism for future investments in our nation’s rivers and ports. East Lansing's GrandRiver Coffee Cafe to close - Lansing State Journal

Fans of GrandRiver Coffee Café will have to find another place to get their java fix. The coffee shop, which opened at 515 W. Grand River Ave. It opened in the space of the former CornerStone Coffee, which closed several area locations in March 2008. Brea Thomas, a manager reached by phone Monday, said GrandRiver owners Ellen and Steve Sawvel plan to retire and move to Traverse City. Thomas, who said she’s been with GrandRiver Coffee for 10 months, said loyal customers have not taken the news well. Thomas said the Sawvels have found a buyer for the building, but she did not know details including whether the space would remain a coffee shop. Ray Walsh, who owns Archives Book Shop next door at 519 W. Grand River, said he plans on remaining in the same location he’s had since 1987. Walsh rents his space from the Sawvels. He said he’s not yet been told who the new owner is. GrandRiver Coffee Cafe will be missed, Walsh said, calling it “a very inviting and warm place. Source: www.lansingstatejournal.com

From the Archives: Frandor - Lansing State Journal

Frandor Shopping Center was the state’s second regional shopping center, built before the era of slick, suburban shopping malls. Built on what was formerly the nine-hole Glenmoor Golf Course, it held its dedication in August 1954, starting out as a haven of specialty shops. With the closing of Northland a few months ago, the Lansing landmark is now Michigan’s oldest regional shopping center. The shopping center was anchored by the Dearborn-based Federal department store. A freestanding Sears also served as an anchor, but was not officially a part of the shopping center. On the north end of the center a miniature golf course paid homage to the property's former use until the Spartan Twin Theater was built in 1967. When first built, Frandor was constructed much like it is now, according to Patrick Corr, part of the... When the 1970s rolled around, the trend was toward enclosed malls, a shopping experience rather than a convenience.
