Sheriff: Investigators continue to probe wreck that killed Washburn University ... - Topeka Capital Journal

Glenda Taylor was quick to offer a smile to her students, friends and even strangers, attendees of a candlelight vigil in her honor said Monday night in front of the Washburn University Arts Building. “She was definitely a champion of students and the department itself,” said Nicole Wilson, a recent Washburn University art graduate. Wilson and Ryan Caldwell, also a recent Washburn art graduate, helped organize the vigil in honor of Taylor, who was chairwoman of the WU art department and an art professor. Taylor was killed Sunday in a biking accident in southeast Kansas. More than 150 people gathered outside the arts building, holding candles, laughing, crying, hugging and sharing stories about Taylor. In the meantime, officials Monday continued to investigate the traffic death, which took place in Crawford County. No citations were issued, and no one was arrested in connection with the Taylor’s death, the Crawford County sheriff said Monday. During an interview, Sheriff Dan Peak said a “solid date” to complete the investigation of Taylor’s death hadn’t been set. Taylor was killed Sunday morning during a bicycle-truck collision at a bicycle time trials in the town of Walnut in Crawford County in southeast Kansas. Ford is adding 1550 workers to build new F-150 truck - Business Insider

The company also said that for the first time it is promoting union-represented workers from the lower entry-level wage to the pay veteran plant workers make. Between 300 and 500 workers will have been promoted by the end of the first quarter, Ford said. In 2007, the United Auto Workers union and the three major U. S. automakers including Ford agreed that new hires would be paid at a rate less than veteran UAW workers. The union and Ford agreed that 20 percent of its plant workers could be entry-level, also called second-tier, employees, with exemptions for a parts plant and an axle plant near Detroit, and for new work "in-sourced" to Ford because of the lower... Of the 1,550 jobs, 900 are allocated for Ford's truck plant in Kansas City and the rest at three stamping, auto parts and axle plants near Detroit. Ford did not say how many of the jobs are being added because of the brisk initial sales of the new F-150, which went on sale several months ago. The new workers will be paid the entry-level, also called second-tier, wage of $15. 78 per hour, and under current contract terms, will receive 5 percent wage increases per year until they reach $19. 28 per hour.
