NHTSA To Investigate How Ford Handled Recall Of Super Duty Diesel Trucks Over ... - Motrolix

Super Duty pickup trucks over sudden loss of power and engine shutdown. NHTSA officials will determine the root cause of the issue and determine if Ford went far enough to address the problems. The issue involves the exhaust-gas sensor in Super Duty F-250, F-350, F-450 and F-550 trucks equipped with the 6. 7-liter turbo-diesel Power Stroke engine. The sensor can fail while the truck is being driven, prompting the driver to “Stop Safely Now. ” After the message is displayed, the truck will lose all throttle response, possibly leading to the shut down of the engine. First involves the sudden nature of the warning light, loss of power and/or stopping of the engine. The NHTSA document points to several F-Series vehicles outfitted as ambulances, which emit an audible chime five times before shutting down, and can’t be immediately restarted. NHTSA officials will investigate vehicles involved in the recall as well as other models, and determine if Ford has done properly handled the recall. This is the second NHTSA investigation into the Ford F-Series Super Duty trucks in a year, as a February 2014 investigation focused on steering issues. Source: motrolix.com

Outwardly, the 2015 F-series Super Duty trucks—F-250, F-350, and F-450—look identical to their 2014 counterparts. Ford’s most-recent Super Duty cosmetic updates came for 2011 , and consisted mostly of a chrome-tacular front-end treatment that continues on this newest model. The big news comes under the truck’s skin: Ford’s in-house, 6. 7-liter Power Stroke diesel V-8 receives a host of changes to produce more power. To achieve its mystery power gains, Ford slapped on a larger turbocharger with a single compressor vane instead of the outgoing version’s dual-sided vane. This gives the exhaust gases more usable surface area to work the compressor, enabling Ford to dial back the boost and ditch the old model’s waste gate. Working in concert with the new turbocharger are new fuel-injector tips, a tweaked fuel pump, and a new exhaust temperature sensor that begets more-accurate control over fuel delivery. That’s considerably more grunt than the 397 horsepower and 765 lb-ft of torque of the 6. 6-liter Duramax diesel V-8 that powers the 2015 Chevy Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD. It also out-torques (barely) the Ram Heavy Duty’s 6. 7-liter Cummins... Payload and towing capacities rise in turn, with the max tow capacity of the F-450 rising from 24,700 pounds to 31,200, should you have a naval ship anchor in your back yard that needs to be hauled away. The F-350’s towing numbers rise as well, with maximum fifth-wheel/gooseneck trailer towing rising to an utterly ridiculous 26,500 pounds. Furthermore, Ford claims that the design of the engine made it relatively easy to upgrade, and that the newfound power does not come at the expense of efficiency. “The designers of the original 6. 7-liter Power Stroke V-8 turbo-diesel predicted that it would eventually need to be upgraded for higher output,” said David Ives, Ford Power Stroke technical specialist.
