US productivity growth rebounds to 1.3 percent in 2nd quarter - KOMO News

The Labor Department said Tuesday that worker productivity increased at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1. 3 percent, up from a drop of 1. 1 percent in the first quarter. The first quarter's decline was revised sharply higher from a previous estimate of a 3. 1 percent decline. The second quarter rebound occurred mostly because the economy grew faster: It expanded at a 2. 3 percent annual rate, compared with the first quarter's anemic 0. 6 percent growth. Weak productivity growth can boost hiring in the short run, as companies have to add more workers to boost output. Productivity has expanded just 0. 3 percent in the past year, far below the long-run average of 2. 2 percent. The government revised the previous three years' data to incorporate recent changes in its estimates of economic growth. As a result, worker productivity was flat in 2013, down from a previous figure of 0. 9 percent growth. That is the weakest showing since 1982. In 2012, productivity growth was revised down to 0. 9 percent from 1 percent. Labor costs, meanwhile, crept up just 0. 5 percent in the second quarter, a sign that wages are rising only modestly. The aluminum-body 2015 Ford F-150 crew cab swept the full slate of IIHS crashworthiness evaluations to qualify for a 2015 TOP SAFETY PICK award. The F-150 crew cab, which Ford calls the SuperCrew, earns good ratings for occupant protection in all five IIHS crashworthiness evaluations — small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraint evaluations. The extended cab, or SuperCab, earns good ratings in the moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraint evaluations but just a marginal rating for occupant protection in a small overlap front crash. Both cab types make up a bigger share of the pickup truck market than regular cabs. Crew cabs accounted for 50 percent, extended cabs 43 percent, and regular cabs 7 percent of 2013 model pickups in HLDI’s vehicle database. The Institute picked the F-150 to test first because it is not only the best-selling vehicle in the U. S. but also the first mass-market vehicle with an all-aluminum body. Ford’s choice of aluminum for the F-150 body means the pickup is about 500 pounds lighter than the 2014 steel-body F-150. During a January 1965 meeting at the White House, President Lyndon B. Johnson told Martin Luther King Jr. that he didn't think that, after pushing the Civil Rights Act through the year before, he could get Congress to pass the Voting Rights Act... After leaving the White House, King said, "We've got to get this president some power," Young recalled, laughing. Johnson used the voting rights bill as his response to the "Bloody Sunday" police beatings of civil rights protesters in Selma, Alabama, that March. In his speech before a joint session of Congress — which many historians consider one of Johnson's most eloquent — Johnson even used the phrase, "We shall overcome," borrowed from the civil rights movement. The states most affected were primarily in the South, although some jurisdictions in other states from Alaska to New York were also required to get federal preclearance of voting law changes.
