Accident involving pickup leaves wheelchair user unhurt - Sierra Vista Herald

SIERRA VISTA — A man in a wheelchair who was struck by a pickup Thursday afternoon was uninjured. According to witnesses and police at the scene, Ty Alexander was traveling west on the sidewalk when he approached the entrance to the parking lot at about 2 p. m. At the same time, a blue, two-door Dodge Ram pickup pulled up to the area,... “Ty was right in front of him when he gunned it,” said Lewis Brooks, who repairs windshield chips and cracks from his stand near the parking lot exit. “Luckily, it was a big four-by-four and the wheelchair protected Ty. ”. Alexander did not appear to suffer any obvious injuries from the incident, said Sgt. Lawrence Boutte of the Sierra Vista police. The wheelchair was trapped underneath the vehicle, so they just pulled him out,” Boutte said. Alexander was taken to Sierra Vista Regional Health Center as a precaution. Brooks said Alexander stops by his tent around the same time nearly each day. After Alexander had been removed from his wheelchair and placed into an ambulance, the driver of the truck, James McCoy, along with officers, had to use a jack to lift the truck before the wheelchair could be removed. Boutte said it was “more than likely” that McCoy would be cited, although what he would be cited with was not clear Thursday. Traffic in the area traveling east on Fry Boulevard was delayed.
