LSU will be starting two first-time starters, including one freshman, on its offensive line when it opens the season at 6:30 p. m. Saturday against McNeese State in Tiger Stadium on the SEC Network. Coach Les Miles, a former Michigan starting guard, wants all his first timers to be next to an old timer in the trenches. This is why he recently moved junior Ethan Pocic from the starting left guard position to starting center and inserted redshirt freshman William Clapp as the starting left guard after Clapp had been working through most of August as the No. 1 center. BATON ROUGE – The loss of a senior starting safety like Jalen Mills might cripple a normal team, but not DBU. Mills, who may miss the No. 14 Tigers’ first two games this season with an ankle injury, has been replaced in the lineup for now by junior Rickey Jefferson, who likely would have been starting at other schools last year. Jefferson has played 20 games with one start in two seasons and tied for the team lead with two interceptions last year. Another member of Defensive Back University who can soften the blow of Mills’ injury is Dwayne Thomas, a junior from New Orleans who can play cornerback and safety and thrived in the Tigers’ extra defensive back alignments last season before a... Thomas made 24 tackles with 2. 5 for losses, including 1. 5 sacks, while also intercepting a pass and forcing a fumble in his short season. Just after Thomas appeared to be recovering well from his knee injury and surgery in spring drills, he was arrested on charges of unlawful entry of a dwelling and simple burglary last June and suspended from the team.
