When the time came for our Chrysler 300C to exit the C/D stage, the sizable sedan did so without a hint of drama. The 300C’s amiable personality and cavernous interior helped the big lug win a lot of friends here, and a couple of logbook comments were repeated over and over during its tenure: “This is a great highway cruiser,” and “nice engine. Despite lots of love for their heating and cooling functions, the seats received nearly unanimous criticism for their hard, flat seatbacks. One staffer whose sole exposure to the 300C came near the end of its stay wondered “if they were this way from the start or if 40,000 miles of hard use had transformed them. Only two staffers, both known to suffer from mild back problems, found them up to the task of offering long-term support, one going so far as to deem them “worthy of something far more expensive” after emerging pain-free from an eight-hour excursion. Chrysler wisely chose to make the most of the resources at hand and go understated with the treatment, as cheap flash likely would be losing its shine at this point. The Alpine sound system continued to win raves, one staffer mentioning that it, combined with the 300C’s quiet interior (40 dB at idle, 70 dB at 70-mph cruise), easily drowned out typical Ann Arbor game-day hysteria while. In the past I've gone too easy on the Chrysler 300C. I've wanted it to be better than it was, treated it like a favoured child, and cut it some slack as a result. I know this because I've just driven a 300C that is (mostly) what I wanted from the get-go, with a driving experience that's more about driving than sitting passively behind the wheel. The steering and suspension changes are the good news in a mid-life update to the 300C that brings bad news on higher prices. Chrysler says these reflect extra equipment and the recent dip in the dollar. So the bottom line — with the $45,000 Limited model now dead — is $49,000 for the 300C. The Luxury model comes in from $54,000. Chrysler knows the end of the Falcon and Commodore will make things easier for its old-school 300C but it's actually... "We think there is actually a very good opportunity for us. There will always be part of the segment that favours large, luxury rear-wheel drive vehicles like the 300C," says Fiat Chrysler Australia head of product strategy Alan Swanson. Although this cat already escaped the bag a few weeks ago when our spy photographers nabbed some clear pictures of an unmasked 2012 Chrysler 300C SRT8, we still felt giddy as we sorted through the official details. Indeed, the particulars have us looking forward to overwriting fond memories of the last-gen car —an office favorite for its antics-inspiring 425-hp, 6. 1-liter Hemi V-8—with ones created behind the wheel of the even burlier new model. As expected, the new SRT8 is packing a 6. 4-liter Hemi V-8 engine, producing an “estimated 465 hp and 465 lb-ft of torque. The company expects 60 mph to arrive in the high four-second range and the quarter-mile to take just under 13 seconds. Although the new version will be heavier, we don’t see those times being difficult to achieve, as the last car hit 60 mph in 4. 7 seconds and the quarter in 13. 2 in our testing. A screen in the IP includes a function to keep tabs on your personal 0-to-60-mph times, maximum lateral acceleration, and quarter-mile times, among other numerical bragging points. The engine and exhaust also are said to have a throatier voice, which is most excellent: SRT had a virtuoso as a base point of comparison ( listen to the old SRT8 here ).
