From 2003 to 2013, the number of licensed drivers over the age of 65 surged by 8. 2 million, a 29 percent increase, according to U. S. Census data. 5 million U. S. drivers are over 84, a staggering 43 percent increase over a decade ago. On the other end of the age spectrum, teenagers no longer have the income or inclination to own a car. Over that same 10-year period, the ranks of drivers under age 20 declined by 3 percent. In the past five years, the number of new cars registered to households with a head age 65 or older has risen 65 percent, according to IHS. On the Los Angeles County government’s official list of employee take-home vehicles, Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas looks very frugal. His assigned car, a 9-year-old Chrysler 300 Limited sedan, cost the county about half as much as the next supervisor’s. But newly released vehicle maintenance records show that Ridley-Thomas, for most of last year, actually had two cars at his disposal. The documents reveal that Ridley-Thomas, chairman of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, was stretching the county’s vehicle resources more than other supervisors, and that he misrepresented his situation when challenged. Ridley-Thomas said he only drove a newer car when his older one was “inoperable. And whether Ridley-Thomas actually drove the cars himself is uncertain. On a recent afternoon, his chauffeur idled one of the big black Chryslers at the county office building downtown. An on-duty sheriff’s deputy escorted Ridley-Thomas to the curb, opened the rear passenger-side door, and the supervisor slid onto the gray leather. A series of stories by reporter Mike Reicher documented how county officials take advantage of a take-home car program. Ridley-Thomas, it turns out, had the use of two cars in 2014 — one old, one new. The older car is a 2006 Chrysler 300 Limited sedan that he drove as a California legislator. The county purchased Ridley-Thomas’ vehicle from the state at a relatively cheap price — $21,445. In July, Ridley-Thomas earned the editorial board’s praise for what appeared a relatively frugal decision compared to his colleagues using the same... Documents recently released show that in addition to the 2006 car, Ridley-Thomas has a 2012 Chrysler of the same model at his disposal. The 2012 Chrysler didn’t show up in earlier documents provided to this news organization, and Ridley-Thomas never tried to correct the record. While Ridley-Thomas’ older car underwent light maintenance that never lasted longer than a day, 9,000 miles were logged on the newer car between May and December 2014 — while it was kept spotless with three times-a-week washings.
