CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Thirteen Cleveland officers face internal charges after they broke several department rules during a deadly high-speed chase in 2012 that ended with 137 rounds of police gunfire, according to department letters released Thursday. The officers are accused of joining a pursuit and crossing city limits without a supervisor's permission, leaving their police cruisers and shooting into a 1979 Chevrolet Malibu with disregard for the safety of other officers at the scene that... Officer Scott Sistek fired one-handed gunshots into the Malibu's windshield as he ran backwards. Officer Michael Farley opened fire as he ran for cover, despite telling internal investigators that he initially held his fire because other police officers were in the way. Several officers said their view of the Malibu and other officers were restricted, but they fired into the car anyway. Police never recovered a gun from Russell's Malibu, and investigators with the Ohio Attorney General's Bureau of Criminal Investigations did not find conclusive evidence that the two ever had a gun. The defect: in the affected vehicles, the flexible steel cables that connect the seat belts to the vehicle at the outside of the driver seat and the front passenger seat may be bent from being sat on while entering the vehicle. Affected vehicles: 2011-2012 Chevrolet Malibu vehicles manufactured April 8, 2010, to October 11, 2012. Number of vehicles affected: 437,045. The fix: GM will notify owners and dealers will replace the outboard lap anchor mounting bracket and... The recall is expected to begin July 3 , 2015. Behthany man faces drug DUI after police chase - Herald & Review

DECATUR – Lindy Hollgarth, 44, of Bethany was arrested on a charge of aggravated driving under the influence, after he drove at a high rate of speed through residential streets while in a cocaine-induced fog and crashed into a tree. Hollgarth was sentenced to two years in prison in 2012 in connection with a similar incident, in which he fled from police at high speeds while three children were in the vehicle, left the roadway and flipped the vehicle several times. Wednesday, Decatur patrol officer Ryan Strebing saw a Chevrolet Malibu traveling north on College Street, then turn east on Leafland Avenue, then south on Union Street, apparently in response to seeing his patrol car. “The vehicle was traveling at greater than reasonable speeds in a residential neighborhood and endangered the safety of any person or property,” Strebing wrote in an affidavit. As Strebing tried to keep pace with the vehicle, it left the roadway once and Hollgarth drove without headlights, in an apparent attempt to elude the officer. After losing sight of the vehicle a couple of times, Strebing saw it driving through the alley north of King Street, then north on Dunham Avenue. “The driver of the Malibu lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a tree at the end of North Dunham Avenue at Leafland Avenue,” the affidavit said. During a police interview, he said he was “high as (expletive)” and “floating” as he drove. Source: herald-review.com
